The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) : A personality test that taps four characteristics and classifies people into 1 of 16 personality types. Four Classification Scales: 1) Extraverted/Introverted. People are more outgoing, social and assertive while those on the introvert side are quiet and shy. 2) Sensing/Intuitive. Sensing individuals are practical and prefer routine and order. They focus on details. Intuitive people rely on unconscious process. Thinkers use reason and logic to handle problems while feeler use emotions and their own personal values to make decisions. 4) Judging/Perceiving. Judging types want control and prefer their world to ordered and structured. Perceivers are more flexible and spontaneous. Others Personality Traits Relevant to OB(Contd. . ) 3)Narcissism: A person with high narcissism has a grandiose sense of his or her own importance, requires excessive admiration, has a sense of entitlement and tends to be arrogant. 4)Self-Monitoring: A personality trait that measures an individuals ability to adjust his or her behavior to external, situational factors. High self-monitors tend to get better performance ratings, take leadership positions, are mobile and take up central positions in their organizations People with low self-monitoring tend to have high behavioral consistency. Values: Basic convictions that a specific mode of conduct or end-state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or converse mode of conduct or end-state of existence. Hofstede’s Framework for Assessing Cultures: 1. Power Distance: The extent to which a society accepts that power in institutions and organizations is distributed unequally. Hofstede’s Framework (cont’d): 2. Individualism versus Collectivism: The degree to which people prefer to act as individuals rather than a member of groups. A tight social framework in which people expect others in groups of which they are a part to look after them and protect them. Hofstede’s Framework (cont’d): 3. Masculinity/Femininity: The value a culture places on traditional gender roles. Masculine societies have men dominating society and separate roles for men and women. Hofstede’s Framework (cont’d): 4. Uncertainty Avoidance: The extent to which a society feels threatened by uncertain and ambiguous situations and tries to avoid them. 5. Long-term Orientation versus Short-term Orientation : A national culture attribute that emphasizes the future, thrift, and persistence. A national culture attribute that emphasizes the past and present, respect for tradition, and fulfilling social obligations. The GLOBE Framework for Assessing Cultures(Contd. . ): a. Assertiveness. The extent to which people are encouraged to be tough, confrontational, assertive, and competitive. b. Future Orientation. The extent to which futureoriented behaviors are encouraged and rewarded. (Equivalent to Hofstede’s long-term/short-term orientation. ) c. Gender Differentiation.
