In 1955, Mayo Clinic helped revolutionize open-heart surgery with the Mayo-Gibbon Heart-Lung Bypass Machine. Following developments included one of the first intensive care units in the United States. In 1968, Mayo Clinic surgeon Mark Coventry, MD, implanted the first FDA-approved artificial hip joint.
