Organization within the Human Body
Cells • Smallest unit of structure & function • Have specialized functions • Examples – Nerve cells (neurons) – Blood cells – Bone cells
Tissues • Group of similar cells working together to carry out the same function • 4 basic types of tissue in the human body – Nerve tissue – Muscle tissue – Epithelial tissue – Connective tissue
Nerve Tissue • Carry impulses back & forth to the brain from the body
Muscle Tissue • Contracts and shortens making body parts move • “movement”
Epithelial Tissue • Covers the surface of the body inside & outside • Inside – As lining or covering of internal organs • Outside – As layer of skin
Connective Tissue • Connects all parts of the body and provides support • Examples – Tendons – Ligaments – Cartilage
Tendon
Ligament
Cartilage
Organs • Two or more types of similar tissues working together to perform the same function • Example – Heart made of muscle & connective tissues which work together (function) to pump blood throughout the body.
Systems • Two or more organs working together to perform a specific function. • 11 different organ systems in the body – – – Circulatory Digestive Endocrine Excretory (Urinary) Immune Integumentary (Skin) Muscular Nervous Reproductive Respiratory Skelatal
