Organization Style Analysis Mini-Lesson
Objectives • Identify and describe different mode of perspective and organization. • Identify structures used for each organizational mode. • Use terminology associated with each mode to analyze literature.
Looking at Vantage Point Think of it as the lens or the organized/intentional focus as it develops/progresses over the course of a text. Some areas or methods of focus include: • • Whole to part (deductive); part(s) to whole (inductive) Order of Significance/Importance Size: Smallest to Largest Reverse Pyramid or Narrowing Lens Focus
What are the structural options? • • Definition (Illustration) Chronological (Time/Order) Comparison and/or Contrast Cause & Effect
Definition (Illustration) • In definition writing the author attempts to provide a definition for a term, concept, state of being, etc. This may be presented through any variety of lenses or filters, and may be straightforward/informative or a personal/subjective redefinition of a concept. • Definition writing often incorporates extensive illustrations or examples in order to provide a context or image of what the definition is describing.
Chronological (time/order) Chronological order is the most familiar structure utilized in narrative writing. It explains when something happened in relation to something else. Here are some of the devices/strategies that can manipulate chronological order: • Pacing – sped up or slowed down action to create meaning, emphasis, mood, etc. • Flashback/ Flashforward • Dream Sequence
Comparison &/or contrast • Bring together two things that fit into the same category or classification in order to bring significance and relevance to the analysis. • There are two basic structures for comparison and contrast writing. • Subject by subject • Point by point Narrative writing often contains a blend of both structures. Identifying shifts between structures and determining the reason for the shift often helps to arrive at deeper meaning.
Cause & Effect • Analysis of why an event occurred and/or traces its consequences. • There are four basic structures for comparison and contrast writing. • Cause Effects: identification of one cause and tracing a series of effects that result. • Causes Effect: exploration of several causes the build or connect and lead to one significant or overarching effect. • Chronological Order: start with the cause and detail its effects in the order in which they occurred. (Causes Effect) • Reverse Chronological Order: begin with a known effect and work backwards through possible causes (Effect Causes)
Cause & Effect • Terminology connected to cause and effect: • Causal Chain: when the effect of one event becomes the cause of a subsequent event; these complex relationships must be fully explained and linked in order to fully analyze why something happened • Immediate versus Remote Causes: the cause closest to the event in time versus causes that are followed by a lapse in time or additional action/events • Main versus Contributing Causes: most important or pivotal cause versus the less important merely contributing causes
