Organization Study Skills Test Taking Skills Teachers: Ms. J. Lilly & Mr. R. Myers
Why are these skills important? � Effective organizational Skills, study skills, & test taking skills are among the top indicators of success for students! � In today’s workforce, you are going to be expected to wear many hats. This means you will have to perform tasks efficiently and effectively. If your workplace is not properly organized, tasks pile up, paperwork gets lost, and valuable time is spent on finding information that should be readily available. � Good organization skills saves time and money, and also reduces stress.
Interesting information �A 2011 survey was conducted on 18, 000 business leaders. �More than half of those surveyed said they lost rougly NINE hours a work week (based on a 40 hour work week) due to lack of organization!

Activity �H 0 w do you stay organized? �At each table, write at least 5 ways in which you stay organized. You will get approximately 3 -4 minutes per station. �When your teacher tells you to move, go to the next table and write at least 5 more ways you can become organized. �No list should contain the same strategy twice.
Test Taking & Study Skills �Next, we will be discussing test taking and study skills. We will provide you with several tips that you can use before, during, and after a test, so that you can complete a test to the best of your ability.
Before the Test �Start studying EARLY! �Break assignments/sections into smaller parts. �Manage your time �Find a well lit, comfortable place where you are least likely to be distracted. �Take short study breaks
Before the Test �Jot down the areas of emphasis of the test. �Go over practice tests, sample problems, review material, the textbook, & class notes. �Catch up on missed work as soon as possible. • NOTE: If you are doing a listening test, or a case study, for example, be sure to read ALL questions before you begin. This way, you will know what to listen for!
Before the Test �Get a good nights sleep �Set your alarm/backup alarm
Before the test �Eat well �Use the bathroom before the test starts �Show up early for the test �Gather all materials the night before. Make a list! �Bring at least 2 pencils or pens
During the Test �Read instructions carefully. �Do a quick survey of the test so that you know how to budget your time. �Re-read instructions after you have answered the question to be sure that you have answered it fully. �Ask your teacher for clarification, if necessary. �Remain calm. If you don’t know the answer to a question, move ahead to the next question. Do not fixate on a question that you don’t know!
During the Test cont. . . TIP: Never leave out a multiple choice question! Start by eliminating the answers that you KNOW are incorrect. �If there is time left over, check over your test
During the Test �Use positive self talk
After the test �When you get your test back look it over and make sure that there are no grading mistakes. �Make sure that you understand where you went wrong. If you don't know the answer, look it up, ask a classmate or ask the teacher. �Be sure to take notes on what the teacher wanted for an answer. �Save the test as study material for future tests.

Study Tools cont. . . TIP: Learn how to use mnemonics. Mnemonics: a tool to help remember facts or a large amount of information. It can be a song, rhyme, acronym, image, or a phrase to help remember a list of facts in a certain order. �Example: Treble Clef Notes (lines) in music Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
