ORGANIC FARM INSPECTION How will the certification audit be conducted to obtain the certificate

MISSION STATEMENT Rather than looking at pages of organic certification rules and regulations, let’s look at how they are translated in practical world. Jasurbek Rustamov Expert for Organic Agriculture APD Project

This training covers the Inspection of ● Crop production ● Livestock ● Processing ● Beekeeping ● Wild collection Types of inspections ORGANIC FARM - First Inspection - Annual announced inspection - Unannounced inspection PLEASE FOLLOW THE TRAINING WITH SAMPLE INSPECTION CHECKLIST

1 ACCESS TO UNITS AND INFORMATION

01 Access to all units Land Storage unit Machines Office 02 Responsible person Director Farm Manager Chief Accountant Agronomist Suspension of Certification Additional inspection 03 Access to documents Accounting Invoices Sales documents Input purchase 04 Changes notification Land Suppliers Activities Labels

2 ORGANIC SYSTEM PLAN ORGANIC MANAGEMENT PLAN

MISSION STATEMENT OSP – a document which describes everything related to the organic production OSP – is an internal document that needs to be filled in and updated annually by the farmer before the Audit OSP – is provided by CB and has to be filled in and sent before inspection

DESCRIPTION OF ALL UNITS LAND, PLOTS ORGANIC STATUS STORAGE UNITS PROCESSING UNITS DOCUMENTATION OTHERS CROP PRODUCTION SEEDS CROP ROTATION IRRIGATION WATER FERTILIZATION DISEASE, PEST, WEED SUB-CONTRACTORS HARVEST, HANDLING LABELING TRACEBILITY COMPLAINTS Auditor checks all the information and confirms that the OSP is up to date Missing information is updated and non-compliance is issued

3 CONVERSION Last date of use of prohibited inputs (artificial fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides) Last use of Pesticide Sowing date Documented field history for 3 years For newly added fields all documents above has to be provided, CB has to be informed. Last use of Pesticide Sowing date Conversion period is 2 years for annual crops, 3 years for perennial crops. Date of conversion is last use of prohibited inputs or inspection date Harvest CONVENTIOANAL ORGANIC

SEPARATION Organic and conventional production is a sign to be attentive. Buffer zones are at least 10 meters Separation measures in place in all operations – production, harvesting, transportation Environment has to be checked for sources of contamination Equipment, machinery, storage units, transport cleaned for organic operations Organic Wheat + Conventional Wheat = Conventional Wheat

4 PLANT PRODUCTION

ORGANIC SEEDS -Purchase documents -Own seeds - Invoices , packages (confirm quality) CONVENTIOANAL (UNTREATED) Unavailability proof from at least 3 suppliers Documental evidence and visual confirmation Using treated seeds will downgrade organic land, separation measure apply. TREATED SEEDS GMO Governmental program CB Permission before planting -Forbidden -Non GMO declaration from Supplier

DOCUMENTATION FERTILIZERS CROP ROTATION OTHERS Used fertilizer amounts per plot, origin, invoices, certificates, manure origin, amount, EU Regulation Annex I Long term crop rotation plan, nomonoculture, legumes in crop rotation Used manure calculation per ha (is < 170 kg/ha/year) Manure from factory farming is not allowed (chicken) Documental evidence and visual confirmation Non-compliance will annulate conversion period

PEST , DISEASE, WEED MANAGEMENT PREVENTION -Preventive measure are practiced to combat pest, disease and weeds -Farm book, purchase documents -Check produce and field for disease, pests and weeds SAMPLE TAKING Produce sample is taken to prove no PPM residue is found PPM residue tolerance level is 0 in organic produce. INPUTS According to Annex II EU regulation Calculation of use of copper ha/year Weed control methods Chemical PPM are forbidden Biological PPMs should have product description, subject to approval

DOCUMENTATION Field map has to show all the plots, identification numbers, borders Sketch map of storage units, processing premises Land use rights – documented evidence, lease contract etc. Farm book – all operation documentation, input use per plot Purchase documents consistent with usage and stock records

5 HARVESTING, PROCESSING, LABELING

HARVESTING Harvested amount, documentation per plot/product Harvesting equipment , cleaning measures Compare harvested amount with other years, other areas, overestimation? Storage units, estimation of produce, labeling of storage units. LABELING Sample label has to be sent for approval before usage KZ-BIO- XXX (Code of CB) – only for organic, not in conversion produces External storage units, Lease contract, Separation measures, PROCESSING Farm level processing – cleaning, sorting, packing Cleaning ratio/ Processing ratio = 0. 80 100 tons = 80 tons clean , 20 tons waste KZ – BIO – XXX Non EU Agriculture
