ORGAN and ORGAN SYSTEMS
Our body is made up of a number of organ systems all working separately and also together to keep us alive.
Our body is made up of different types of cells. A group of cells working on a similar task is known as a tissue. Groups of tissues that work together are called organs. A collection of organs working together is known as an organ system. These combine to make an organism.
Circulatory System Carries oxygen and nutrients to cells and waste materials away from cells via the blood arteries heart veins capillaries
Respiratory System Allows the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the surrounding environment nose trachea (or windpipe) lungs diaphragm
Digestive System mouth esophagus System responsible for getting food into and out of the body, breaking them down into substances small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream liver gallbladder small intestine rectum stomach pancreas large intestine anus
Excretory System Allows the removal of unnecessary materials from the body, controlling the amount and content of body fluids lungs kidneys ureter urethra bladder
Nervous System brain spinal cord Receives, interprets and responds to stimuli from the environment and sensory organs within the body through electrical signals nerves
Skeletal System tendons: binds muscle to bone ligaments: binds bone to bones Gives structure to the body, protecting and supporting body tissues and internal organs cartilage
Muscular System Allows the body to move, maintains body posture and allows the circulation of blood throughout the body Smooth muscular tissue Skeletal muscles Cardiac muscle
