Orem’s Self-Care Theory Improvement of contemporary health § Local: Health departments offer educational programs for county residents to assist in increasing self-care abilities and overall health (Grand Traverse County, 2006) § Regional: Pure Michigan FITness series encourages Michigan residents to increase and improve self-care in physical fitness (Michigan Fitness Foundation, 2012) § Global: 70 -80% on individuals with long-term illnesses provide self-care, as long-term illnesses are increasing globally nurses must assist in self-care abilities ( Wilson, Kendall & Brooks, 2006)

Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Using Evidence Based Practice (EBP) • After assessing patients nurses use EBP to plan and implement interventions based on their patients self-care level • If interventions are ineffective nurses then will use research to discover different interventions to improve self-care abilities • Interventions function as devices to assist in self-care (Evans, 2010)
