Purpose • This presentation will provide information about the 2020 -2021 Oregon Science Assessment.
Requirements and Test Information
Science Assessment Requirements • The Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) Science Assessment is required to be given to every student in grades 5, and 8. • Per the approved waiver from U. S. Department of Ed. , the 11 th grade science assessment is not required. Parents may request their child take the 11 th grade OSAS Science Assessment. • Students in 10 th grade may target up to the grade 11 assessment. • Passing 10 th grade scores will be banked
2020 -21 Oregon Science Assessment • Test window: April 13 -June 11, 2021 • Students will have one annual test opportunity. • Scores will not be available to students immediately upon completion of the assessment. • Students have 45 calendar days to complete the science test once they have begun taking it. Oregon Science Assessment • Assessing the 2014 Oregon Science Standards (Next Generation Science Standards) • 5 th Grade Science Assessment contains items aligned to 3 rd-5 th grade Oregon Science Standards. • 8 th Grade Science Assessment contains items aligned to 6 th-8 th grade Oregon Science Standards. • High School Science Assessment contains items aligned to all high school Oregon Science Standards. More information about the 2014 Oregon Science Standards (NGSS) can be found on the ODE Science Standards webpage.
Oregon Science Assessment Item Development Process and Examples
Cluster/Tasks & Stand-Alone/Independent Items • Designed to engage the student in grade-appropriate, meaningful scientific activity aligned to a specific standard • Begins with a phenomenon (scenario) or design problem that engages student interest and can be explained, modeled, investigated, or designed using the knowledge and skill(s) described by the standard • Stand-Alone items are brief with 1 -2 interactions whereas Cluster/tasks are longer and more complex with an average of 810 interactions. For more information on Item Specifications, please see the Item Specification documents available on the ODE Science Assessment Webpage.

Spanish Toggle Feature • Allows the student to switch back and forth between Spanish and English. • The student may answer in either language. Their responses are saved to both languages automatically. • Highlighting, masking (which can be used by the student cover up portions of text they wish to ignore) and similar features may be lost or only persist for the language where it was used. • When the student scrolls down the page in one language, their approximate location will be retained when the switch to the other language.

Estimated Time Assessment Grade-Level Estimated Time in hr: minutes* 5 th Grade 1: 20 8 th Grade 1: 20 High School 1: 30 *These are estimates for most students (80% percentile) based on 2018 -19 test data and do not account for any time needed to start computers, load secure browsers, and log in students. Field test items will not be included in the 202021 Science Assessments; therefore, estimated testing time has slightly decreased from previous years.
Resources
Preparation: Sample Test • Students should practice with the sample test to become more familiar with the structures of the items and the features of the online assessment platform. • Parents may log into the sample test as guest users to view a sample of items. • The sample test can be found on the website: https: //osasportal. org/
