OBJECTIVES • The students should be able to: a. understand the order of operations, and b. use the order of operations to solve the problem
What do we mean by ORDER OF OPERATIONS ? ? • order of operations is the order in which you solve a math problem with many components. • a specific set of steps to follow in multistep problems to ensure that everyone gets the same final answer.
Remember the phrase: “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS.
What does PEMDAS stands for?
• P = Parenthesis • E = Exponents • M = Multiply • D = Divide • A = Add • S = Subtract
There are Four Rules for Order of Operations 1. P ü Parentheses first 2. E ü Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc. ) 3. MD ü Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) 4. AS ü Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)
1. Parentheses • The first step of the order of operations Example: 6 × (5 + 3) = 6× 8 = 48
Exponents • The second step of the order of operations • Example: 5× 22 = 5× 4 = 20
Multiplication • The third step of the order of operations • EXAMPLE: 1. 5 x 5=25 2. (6 -3)2 x 2 á 9 x 2 = 18
Division • The fourth step of the order of operations • EXAMPLE: 1. 16 ÷ 2 = 8 2. 8 ÷ 2 + (3 x 6) á 4 + 18 = 22
Addition • The fifth step of the order of operations EXAMPLE: 1. 3+6=9 2. 3+4÷ 2 á 3+2=4
Subtraction • The last step of the order of operations : EXAMPLE: 1. 16 – 4 = 12 2. 18 – (2 + 2)2 á 18 - 16 = 2
EXAMPLE: • 3(3 + 7) 2 ÷ 5 = 3(100) ÷ 5 = 300 ÷ 5 = 60 (parentheses) (exponents) (multiplication) (division)
Let's have a Practice!!!! Using the rules in order of operation, solve the following problems. . 1. 42 + (2 x 5) x 3 – 6 ÷ 2 = 2. (3 x 2)2 ÷ 5 – 3 + 4 =
Practice Answers • 42 + (2 x 5) x 3 – 6 ÷ 2 • 16 + 10 x 3 – 3 • 16 + 30 – 3 • 46 – 3 • = 43
Application!!!
• In our lives and in MATH, we need to do things in a certain order to make sure they turn out right. • That is where the ORDER OF OPERATIONS come into play!
How Do I Remember It All. . . ? PEMDAS !! • P Parentheses first • E Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc. ) • MD Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) • AS Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)
thank You!!
