Order of Operations Integers
Warm-up: Complete the questions then click to check your answers. -63 (-36) ÷ (-4) = 9 (+7)(-9) = (+6)(-8) = (+20) ÷ (-5) = -4 -48 (-1) – (-9) = 8 (-4)(-8) = 32 (-3)+ 8 = (-3) – (9) = -12 5 Remember: When you add or subtract, the first number is where the balloon starts, then you decide – is it going up or down. When multiplying or dividing, you need to figure out if the answer is positive or negative, and then multiply or divide the numbers as usual.
Order of Operations: See what you remember. Try this question, then, click to check your work. Note: When we work vertically to solve equations, no equal sign is required. Can also be written as
Order of Operations 1. Complete all operations in brackets. Note: (-3) is not an operation. The brackets are used to help us see that the number is negative. You will see square brackets if integers are involved. 2. Next complete all multiplication and division, in order, from left to right. 3. Complete all addition and subtraction last, in order, from left to right. Note: When you see a fraction, it means divide. However, it implies that there are brackets around the numerator and denominator. That means, you have to evaluate each separately, the numerator and then the denominator, before dividing.
Example: Evaluate. Step 1: Brackets Step 2: Multiplication or Division reading left to right. Step 3: Addition or Subtraction reading left to right.
Example: Evaluate. Note: the fraction line implies brackets on the top and bottom which means we need to evaluate the numerator and denominator separately. Start with the numerator. Step 1: Brackets: No brackets in the numerator. Step 2: Multiplication or Division Step 3: Addition or Subtraction Step 4: The denominator contains no operations, so we are ready to divide. 5
