OPTIC Analysis Strategy

OPTIC O = Overview Write a brief overview of the image: in a complete sentence, what is this image about? O = This image is an advertisement about gum. Two guys who dress, smile, and walk identically are assumed to be twins (based on the word “double” and “twins” but they are “different”.

OPTIC P = Parts Scrutinize (dissect) the parts of the visual. Key in (focus) on all the parts by noting any details that seem important. This can be anything: color, figures, textures, scenery, groupings, shading, location, patterns, numbers, etc. P = It’s a sunny day. The “twins” are on the boardwalk of a beach; blue skies, kites and beach balls are within view. Just the location alone makes the viewer think: fun, relaxing, and refreshing. The color of green typically symbolizes nature, fertility, life, and rest. Their smiles make the viewer think they are out having a fun adventure.

OPTIC T = Title Use the title to clarify the subject of the image. Consider both literal and metaphorical meanings. What does the title suggest? Is there any text in the image – a caption, or words in the image itself? What might this text suggest? T = Title “New Doublemint Twins are different. They’re mints. ” The title suggests that this product is the same quality as the doublemint gum, but since it is a mint instead of a gum, it is different.

OPTIC I = Interrelationships Use the words in the title or caption and the individual parts of the visual to determine connections and relationships within the graphics. Consider how the parts come together to create a mood or convey an idea or argument. I = The two men in the picture are brothers from different mothers: they are identical in their dress, walk, activities, and tastes in mints.

OPTIC C = Conclusion Write a conclusion paragraph about the image as a whole: think about what the artist, photographer, creator, or designer might be trying to capture and convey, and what ideas arguments, or implications this image presents. C = They seem to be having fun; it suggests that if the viewer wants to have fun, they too should try doublemint.
