OPPOSING HELPING THE HOMELESS By Hana Mahmoud
WHY SHOULD WE HELP THOSE WHO WON’T WORK Some governments have helped homeless people by giving them homes. “Handing mentally ill substance abusers the keys to a new place may sound like an example of wasteful government spending, ” writes The New Yorker’s James Surowiecki. http: //blogs. mprnews. org/todays-question/2014/09/should-wegive-the-homeless-homes/ Blogger Danny • 8 months ago This is usually one of those issues where people get stuck on the emotional hump of "giving" money or things to "undeserving" people and never make it to the societal consideration of the costs of homelessness.
Turn a blind eye to those in need Why should your suffering make our hearts bleed You made your bed, lie down well I work everyday so I can have a place to stay, no one to give me a hand out and make sure I am ok Your begging doesn’t move me Your children starving was a choice of your own Yes we all have a story but why? Why did you let it get so bad I mean, didn’t you know that your choices will be the basis of your life No remorse, I am sure someone tried talking to you Now by the way here’s an application! Sir ma’am have a good day! By Hana Mahmoud
DEBATE. ORG • Why. . . Just. . . Why help them • Why should we help them, what have they ever done for us. All they do is give the country a bad reputation. It's not our fault that they became homeless so why should we drag ourselves it to their problems. If they are lazy enough to sit on the floor all day and not at least attempt to get a job then why should us hard working people who are struggling our selves help the people that cant be bothered to try and get off the streets. • Why should we help if they make more than us? • I've been doing research on the homeless and it shows that there are con artists who pretend to be hobos and make over $100 a day. That's $20, 000 of income per year without being taxed. If this is the case what are the actual homeless people spending their money on? Drugs, booze? Why should we help if we are struggling ourselves? Giving away free homes to just run a crack house? http: //myfox 8. com/2013/11/14/homeless-tenn-couple-given-freehome-strips-it-for-money-to-buy-crack/ Why should we help their way of life? Doesn't make sense to me, all i see is the government cleaning up the streets to look better on them.
Reasons some have given as to why they oppose helping the poor • I don’t know what they’re going to do with it • I don’t like being duped • Do they really need it • It’s criminal exchange • Does my money really help • Homelessness isn’t the problem, it’s a symptom • Giving People Money is Sort of a Bullshit Pansy Way to Avoid Real Help • Homelessness, like any other social problem, is influenced by • Three quarters of those who are homeless report having problems with alcohol, drug abuse, or mental illness
Conclusion Helping the homeless through financial incentives thus far has not proven to be helpful in solving the problem as a whole. Some believe homelessness is a symptom to other underlying factors and the governments assistance perpetuates a cycle. Mecklenburg County plans to significantly end homelessness in the county by 2016. The plan is to provide homes to those suffering from chronic homelessness despite addictions or mental illness. Currently the county has not released a detailed plan on how this strategy will differ from previous programs. However the amount it cost to serve the homeless population through hospital visits and taking space in jail will be reduce to about 20 k from 40 k person. We know that helping the homeless population in this capacity will save tax dollars but we are unsure at this time if there is an actual remedy to permanently end homelessness through supportive services.
