Opportunity for Transformation in Mathematics Learning
Overview of the presentation • About PISA • Salient Features of Mathematical Framework • Changes which may help
Programme for International Student Assessment v International survey conducted in every 3 years v Evaluate education systems worldwide v Chandigarh UT will participate in 2021 edition v KVS and NVS as National Option v Paper Based Assessment ( PBA) format
Focus of PISA 2021 PISA conducted by Organization for Econonic Co-operation and Development (OECD) focuses on the assessment of student’s performance in : q. Reading q. Mathematics q Science PISA 2021 cycle will focus on mathematics as the main cognitive domain.
Assessment Focus Based on content that can be found in curricula across the world Looks at students’ ability Ø to apply knowledge and skills Ø to analyse and reason Ø communicate effectively as they examine, interpret and solve real life problems.
Types of Test Items • Multiple-choice testing • Variety of formats • one-third Open ended questions
Questionnaires • Background questionnaire for student on information about themselves, their attitudes to learning and their homes. • School Principals are given questionnaire about their schools.
Test Administration • Randomly assigned to the randomly sampled • Greater coverage of the content than if all students completed the same version
Field Trial Main Survey
Field Trial before Main Survey • Field Trial in 2020 • Test items, too easy or too hard in certain countries are dropped from the Main Survey in all countries
Final Reporting • The data collected are analysed • Results with Report publised in 2022 • Techncial Standard should be followed to be included in the Final report. No deviation in sampling, Proecedure and Confidentiality is allowed.

Content for Assessment
Based on Contexts
Process tested
Formulate, Employ, Interpret and Evaluate • Formulating situations mathematically involves identifying how to apply and use mathematics to the problem being posed in the real world—it includes being able to take a situation and transform it into a form amenable to mathematical treatment; • Employing mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning involves using mathematical concepts, procedures, facts and tools to derive a mathematical solution; • Interpreting and evaluating the mathematical outcomes involves reflecting upon mathematical solutions or results and interpreting or evaluating them back in the context of the initial problem.

Sample Questions • 2012 Questions of Mathematics are relvant as the current Framework is an extension of the same. • Refer the PDF enclosed
Present Approach to Teaching and Learning • Teach Mathematics content as per text books/syllabus • Apply the concept learnt in abstract way without linking to life or to other concepts in Maths or other disciplines • Practice and Perform in tests
Change for Better • Find out real life situations for applications of Mathematics • Create the need for learning Mathematical concepts in a particular unit • Teach the concepts required with learner participatnion • Use the concepts to solve real life situations of the children • Ask the students to apply the learning to unknown situations.
Three directional approach • Improving Quality of Teaching Learning process by connecting the learning to life. • Improvement in Formative and Year end Assessment by focusing on the processes involved rather than content • Redefining the content with context
Action • Map every concept with real life (Societal , Scientific Personal and Occupational context) and focus on Change & Relationship, Space & Shape, Quantity and Uncertainty • Assessment be contextualized and evaluate the processes (Formulate, Employ, Evaluate and Intepret) • Capacity Building of Teachers to help them Cotextulaize, shift focus to Processes and integrating Maths concepts within and without
