Making the vision come alive! What DPS students and educators are saying about the vision…
What does this look like in a classroom?
Example of a 4 th grade literacy unit In this unit, students explore the identities of writers through reading, discussing, and writing about poems and poets. They begin by reading and analyzing the novel Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. Students learn about the characteristics of poetry by closely reading famous poems featured in the novel. For their performance task, students select a poet to research further. Then they write an original poem inspired by their poet’s work, and read informational text in order to write a biographical essay about their poet’s life. Finally, students present their poem and essay during a Poet’s Performance.
Table Activity 2 • What would your student enjoy about this unit? • Where do you find rigor in the unit? • How could your student personalize the unit to meet his/her interests?
