What are Open Educational Resources (OER’s)? Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others. Open includes right to retain, reuse the content through a variety of platforms, ability to revise, adapt and modify content, right to combine and remix content to create something new, ability to share copies including redistributing your own remixed or revised copies. Generally, does not require a login or other personal identification from students or faculty. Everything from videos to simulation software to lesson outlines to public domain book repositories.
What is a Creative Commons License? These Creative Commons licenses reflect the 5 R's and would be defined as Open Educational Resources (OER)
What they are not… E-textbooks by commercial publishers, including rentals. Custom textbooks that can only be purchased through a retailer. Semester course fees for platform access, sometimes knows as First Day initiatives or Inclusive Access programs.
