Open ROV: Robot By: David Murdock
What is it? • The Open ROV Robot is a robot designed to explore underwater to educate and learn about what really goes on under the surface.
Who Designed it? • The co-designers of the robot were David Lang and Eric Stackpole. They wanted to develop a robot that was low cost so everyone could explore. They also made it light weight making it easy for transportation.
Where'd the Idea Come From? • The idea for this project came from Eric Stackpole who wanted to discover whether the legend about the hidden treasure of the Hall City Cave was true. David Lang found out about this robot Stackpole was building and became very interested. He decided to join the team.
Pros • • • Light weight Low cost Very accessible Lots of room to customize it yourself Takes great video footage Very rugged
Cons • Water gets through the seal sometimes • The tether cord could get caught on obstacles in the water • Hard to code if you don’t have any experience • Hard to find buoyancy in the water
How is it powered? • The robot is powered by 8 on-board C batteries. These are mounted in the 2 tubes at the bottom of the robot. This will let the robot move around for about an hour.
How Its Controlled? • Its kind of like playing video games. You control the robots movements by using a keyboard hooked up to a computer. You can also use a game system controller.
