APA frames: from Proto. DUNE to DUNE FD Integration & Shipping § Integration Facility

APA frames: from Proto. DUNE to DUNE FD Integration & Shipping § Integration Facility is NOT next to the cryostat • Installation of photon detectors , cold electronic boxes and temporary (? ) cables for testing • Shipping box to SURF: 2 (? ) APA frames with CE boxes installed § The shipping box, with the APA resting vertically on the long side, will be rotated 180° as it is transferred from surface down to the cryostat • Maximum box size allowed: 7871 L x 3353 H x 1422 W • Proto. DUNE APA box size: 6900 L x 2850 H x 1600 W § The shipping box will never go “flat” during transportation 2 12/05/2017 Alberto Marchionni | APA Frame

APA frames: from Proto. DUNE to DUNE FD 2 -APA assembly § In the clean room on top of the cryostat APAs will need to be rotated vertically and lowered into the toaster area § The bottom APA will be lowered “upside down” and will need to be supported at the bottom and on the sides § The top APA will be lowered and connected to form a 2 -APA assembly § Installation of PD cables, one at the time, on the side beams of the APA § Installation of CE cables for the bottom APA • Present proposal: signal cables through the side beam, power cables through the middle beam § Each step requires engineering evaluation § Need to validate the ”linkage” between APAs § Need to understand possible interference of supports for APA frames with cabling procedure § Need FEA analysis on modified APA frame and 2 -APA assembly 3 12/05/2017 Alberto Marchionni | APA Frame

APA frames: from Proto. DUNE to DUNE FD Interfacing with Photon Detectors The current (proto. DUNE) design foresees the installation of 10 modules (bars) per APA through a slot 19. 2 mm X 108 mm. We need to explore the possibility of increasing light collection by: increasing the dimensions of the slots Increasing the slot width from 19. 2 to 21 or 22 mm would greatly improve the ease of PD installation and connector fixation strength Increasing the slot length (from 108 to 150 mm? 175 mm? ) directly increases the light collection at the lowest cost per photon! Increasing the number of the slots Increases light collection for any collector technology selected E. Segreto, D. Warner 9 12/05/2017 Alberto Marchionni | APA Frame

Summary § This is the first of a series of technical meetings to solve

Summary § This is the first of a series of technical meetings to solve integration, shipping, installation and cabling issues § Modifications to the APA frame have many impacts: board design, handling and stiffness of the frame § We need to carefully plan the engineering work, assessing step by step § The APA consortium has been proactive in interfacing with other consortia § Once we have a conceptual design for the “new” APA frame, we need to address metric vs imperial sizes for the frame, construction procedures (bolted vs welded) § Procurement is not going to be trivial and might also have impact on the design choices § We need to build and wind a DUNE FD APA frame and test a 2 -APA assembly before the TDR (April 2019) 11 12/05/2017 Alberto Marchionni | APA Frame
