Grade 5 Schedule Highlights � Teams of two teachers � Curriculum aligned with Common Core Standards � 2 blocks of core courses daily: ELA/SS and Math/Science � Reading and Math Lab every other day. � Students will continue to have the opportunity to participate in up to 3 musical offerings: band, chorus, and orchestra. Up to 2 can be during the instructional day. The third can be during activity period (2: 21 -3: 00)

Math � � � � Quarter 1: Understanding the place value system and multiplying whole numbers. � � � Quarter 4: Convert units within the metric system (meters to centimeters, for example). Construct and interpret line plots. Calculates the volume of 3 -dimensional shapes using multiplication and addition. Classifies 2 -dimensional shapes by properties of their sides and angles. Quarter 2: Divide whole numbers. Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to the hundredths. Using place value to multiply or divide by powers of 10 and round decimals. Quarter 3: Evaluate expressions using the order of operations. Write and explain numerical expressions. Create two number patterns using two given rules. Create equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. Multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction. Divide whole numbers by a fraction with a numerator of 1, and vice versa. Graph points on the coordinate plane.

Report Card KCSD has adopted a standards based report card for 5 th grade that is similar to the elementary report card. � First Interim ends October 5 th, distribution October 19 th. � First Quarter ends November 9 th, distribution November 20 th. � Second Interim ends December 11 th, distribution December 21 st. � Second Quarter ends January 25 th, distribution February 8 th. � Third Interim ends March 1 st, distribution March 15 th. � Third Quarter ends April 5 th, distribution April 26 th. � Fourth Interim ends May 15 th, distribution May 28 th. � Fourth Quarter ends June 19 th, distribution June 27 th.
Keeping Track… �Our Weekly Update will be emailed to all parents/guardians who submit their email(s) and students will be given a hard copy to bring home at the beginning of each week. �Team website: to access, please go to the KCSD Homepage, click on schools drop down, click on Miller School. On the right side of the Miller Homepage, click on Teachers and then click on Team Trailblazers! �We will begin using Blackboard this school year. �All students now have access to Office 365.
Extra! � 10 th Period: the purpose of 10 th period is for students to receive extra help, time to complete assignments, make up absent work and projects, homework support and/or other school related activities. 10 th periods runs from 2: 24 -3: 00 everyday except for Friday and the second Thursday of every month. �Extended Day Activities: these activities vary by the day and students must sign up for an activity if they are NOT being picked up at 3: 00. These activities run from 3: 003: 40 Monday thru Thursday. Late buses run following extended activities, student can also be picked up at this time.
Miscellaneous �Field Trips: Any parent/guardian who wishes to have the opportunity to chaperone any field trip that accommodates parent/guardian chaperones MUST complete and submit a KCSD Volunteer Application ASAP! You must also be approved by the KCSD Board of Education. �Importance of communication-agenda planners, email, phone contacts. Please keep us updated on any changes!
Miscellaneous Continued �Students are expected to have their ID badges and agenda planners with them throughout the school day. If students lose either/both they are required to purchase a new one(s). � ID badges cost $3 for replacement. � Agenda Planners cost $5 for replacement. �Lockers…. students will be working on organizing materials and lockers. Please remind your child to bring home excess clothing, etc.
