• What is Open. Edge Replication? – Quick Definition: A system that keeps your synchronized to a second database. The second database can be switched to take over your production database in the event of a failure.

• Can be activated in one of two modes: – Time interval: AI file rotation occurs every x seconds • Min: 2 minutes • Max: 24 hours – Full AI File: Rotation occurs when the currently active AI file is filled • Typically used with fixed length AI extents

What is Auto-Archiving? • The Auto-Archive Feature allows setup of a folder to contain the contents of a file(s) created at a particular point in time. The autoarchive timing variable is set to calculate when the AI file(s) is/are to be marked full and ready for auto-archiving. • Skyward recommends setting the timing variable to 300 seconds or 5 minutes.

Protecting your DB • • • BI file protects against failed transactions Mirroring protects against hardware failure AI protects against Human Failure

• Sounds simple enough: – When full, copy/archive AI files to a safe location – Mark them as empty so Open Edge can reuse the space in the files • What’s the problem? – Still need to manage the Archive files

• Perfect World • Separate server for replication database • Separate disk for AI files. • At minimum on it’s own disk • USB Hard Drive • Storage space for AI and Archive files • Five (5) AI extents – Active/Locked (in use), Full and Empty/available • Archive Files – Schedule task/Program to roll forward archived files and remove rolled Archive files from source folder. • Test your recovery process to make sure it works
