CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY What is Open Access (cont)? • Open Access publication + Open public sector information + Open data sharing networks = an effective e. Research future.
CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY Why Open Access? • • • Increased Accessibility Acceleration of research results Economically feasible Empowers readers New visibility, readership and impact
CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY How Open Access? • OA Journals – peer review content is freely available to the world Ø non-profit (e. g. Public Library of Science or PLo. S) and for-profit (e. g. Bio. Expect more to come. • ABS and Geoscience Australia are both considering Open Access here.
CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY OA and Federal Government Review of the National Innovation System “Venturous Australia” Hon. Kim Carr “We are and will remain a net importer of knowledge, so it is in our interest to promote the freest possible flow of information domestically and globally. The arguments for stepping out first on open access are the same as the arguments for stepping out first on emissions trading – the more willing we are to show leadership on this, we more chance we have of persuading other countries to reciprocate. And if we want the rest of the world to act, we have to do our bit at home. ”

CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY CDU e. Space • We intend to start collecting the full text of publications to attach to metadata records very soon. We will start with HERDC items. If you know of anyone who can help with this activity please contact me. Anthony. hornby@cdu. edu. au or ext 6011 Every assistance we can get is appreciated. • Once e. Space is made live we will enable OAI interfaces to the system to allow all the metadata and full text to be indexed and searchable by Google Scholar, OAIster, the ARROW Discovery Service and others. • We intend to extend the use of the repository in 2009 and anticipate working closely with the CDU research community to develop e. Space to best meet your needs.
CHARLES DARWIN UNIVERSITY Benefits to you once we are live • Web statistics available, see who is accessing your research in near real time • New citation tools like Citeseer will find your research and show who is citing it more efficiently. • Citation rates are likely to increase • Never lose research again, we’ll keep it safe for you accessible via a permanent link. • A permanent link you can share with your friends / colleagues now & into the future.
