What is Bill 148? Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017 (Bill 148) Passed into law on November 22, 2017. Amendments to three primary pieces of legislation: • Labour Relations Act (“LRA”) • The Occupational Health and Safety Act (“OHSA”) • The Employment Standards Act (“ESA”) – significant affect on colleges
Primary Financial Risk Employment Standards Act • Minimum wage Jan. 2018, Jan. 2019 • 2 paid days (of 10) personal emergency leave • 4% Vacation - Less than 5 years of service • 6% Vacation – More than 5 years of service • Equal Pay for Equal Work • Management of contractors • Proactive enforcement • Change in workplace • Additional / Extended Leaves • Pregnancy Leave / Parental Leave • Family Medical • Domestic / Sexual violence • Critical Illness • Child Death / Crime Related Disappearance 7

Algonquin’s Response Research/Brainstorming • Task Force - representation from across the College • Meeting weekly to: • Analyze the impact • Prepare financial projections • Identify and analyze options • Generate discussion with Steering Committee and Leadership Team • Some ideas will be identified for implementation in the short term, mid term or long term • This month we are outlining our three year plan for a balanced budget to the Board of Governors. • Created workplace@algonquincollege. com to allow employees to engage in the discussion whenever they have an idea or question. 14
