The Inconsistent Triad • This is the name for an argument based on the idea that three different things cannot exist at once. • For example, some may say only two out of the three things can be true (I think they can though!) • Hopefully, this inconsistent triad is not too close to home… • Watch this Video: https: //www. bbc. co. uk/bitesize/guide s/zhsjscw/video • It will introduce the concept re. the Christian response to suffering to this equation.
The Inconsistent Triad • Philosophers Epicurus and JL Mackie, argued that the common understanding of the nature of God, does not allow for suffering to exist. • For example, if God is omnipotent (allpowerful), and God is also omnibenevolent (all-loving), then he is either is not all loving or not all powerful as otherwise he would be able to stop or prevent suffering.
The Inconsistent Triad - Task • Write ‘The Inconsistent Triad’ as a heading, and make note of the diagram, feel free to use the more understandable versions of the words instead. • Challenge Task: Describe, in 1/ 2 sentences, its meaning.
