Online Belts and Hoses
In this task we will inspect the hoses and belts on your vehicle. Watch the video for cues on where to find the hoses and belts. Some vehicles will have one or more belts and types of belts. There are several types of hoses, even coolant hoses. We will be only interested in four; upper and lower radiator hoses, and the inlet and outlet heater hoses.
Once you find the belt/s examine them for any wear as described on the website referenced on the task sheet. Once again here is the most important part of this task. Because hoses and belts are made from rubber, they are a wear item and need to checked on a regular basis. As we come into summer, the cooling system become extremely vital and can cause a huge repair bill if compromised. Notice the type of belt/s you may have from the four choices.
Draw a picture of your belt routing. Here is the one for my Toyota. You do not have to label the pulleys.
You should always carry around a picture of your belt routing just in case of an emergency so you know how the belt is installed. Locate the four hoses as instructed in the video. If the engine is cool you may want to squeeze the hoses to make sure they are neither too soft or too hard. Radiator hoses due to the hot coolant flowing through them all the time tend to get too soft. The heater hoses on the other hand tend to get too hard. Either way the hoses should be replaced prior to failure.
Take your pictures.
