Wales Research findings Retrieval techniques are: • consistent use of the brain muscle; • improving performance; • developing understanding in a more effective way. Learning over a period of time : • gives learners an opportunity to master their skills, knowledge and understanding; • requires a special effort to retrieve information and therefore a learner is more likely to remember for a longer period of time. • leads to learners understanding and Focsus: Retrieval techniques and learning over time Experimenting • A series of frameworks for retrrieval tasks were devised for the field, such as these in the pictures. • A package of new activities was devised for Y 10 on the novel ‘I Ble’r Aeth Haul y Bore? ’ which combines retrieval tasks and ‘Pause and capture’ tasks which required learners to use information from previous chapters of the novel to write extended answers similar to question A in the higher tier paper. Outcome Learners able to retrieve information more consistently in lessons Learners recognise their strengths and their areas for improvement. The next step Continue to experiment with retrieval tasks, share them with the area, and incorporate them in the department’s work plans.
