Wales Research findings Retrieval techniques are: • consistent use of the brain muscle; • improving performance; • developing understanding in a more effective way. Learning over a period of time : • gives learners an opportunity to master their skills, knowledge and understanding; • requires a special effort to retrieve information and therefore a learner is more likely to remember for a longer period of time. • leads to learners understanding and Focsus: Retrieval techniques and learning over time Experimenting • A series of frameworks for retrrieval tasks were devised for the field, such as these in the pictures. • A package of new activities was devised for Y 10 on the novel ‘I Ble’r Aeth Haul y Bore? ’ which combines retrieval tasks and ‘Pause and capture’ tasks which required learners to use information from previous chapters of the novel to write extended answers similar to question A in the higher tier paper. Outcome Learners able to retrieve information more consistently in lessons Learners recognise their strengths and their areas for improvement.
