About the One Health Initiative
About the One Health Initiative Mission Statement Recognizing that human health…, animal health, and ecosystem health are inextricably linked, One Health seeks to promote, improve, and defend the health and well-being of all species by enhancing cooperation and collaboration between physicians, veterinarians, other scientific health and environmental professionals and by promoting strengths in leadership and management to achieve these goals.
About the One Health Initiative One Health Goals • Education between human medical, veterinary medical schools, and schools of public health and the environment • Communication in journals, at conferences, and via allied health networks • Improved clinical care through the assessment, treatment and prevention of cross-species disease transmission • Cross-species disease surveillance and control efforts in public health • Better understanding of cross-species disease transmission through comparative medicine and environmental research • Development and evaluation of new diagnostic methods, medicines and vaccines for the prevention and control of diseases across species and • Inform and educate political leaders and the public sector through accurate media publications
Timeline of One Health 1964 – Calvin Schwabe, DVM, Sc. D, MPH, coins term “One Medicine” 2004 – Wildlife Conservation Society publishes the 12 Manhattan Principles “Building Interdisciplinary Bridges to Health in a Globalized World” 2007 – American Medical Association passes the “One Health Resolution” promoting partnership between human and veterinary medicine 2008 – FAO, OIE and WHO collaborate with UNICEF, UNSIC and the World Bank to develop a document titled, "Contributing to One World, One Health™-A Strategic Framework for Reducing Risks of Infectious Diseases at the Animal-Human-Ecosystems Interface. “ 2009 – One Health expanded and office established at CDC
One Health in Action Zoonoses Education Coalition: Establishes guidelines to be used by the public to promote healthy pets and people (PIJAC, NASPHV, AVMA, USDA, FDA, CDC) National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians: consult with physicians, emergency rooms, legislators, local officials, schools, health departments and the general public on preventing and controlling diseases CDC Partnership on Youth Zoonoses Prevention: educate youth on transmission and prevention of zoonoses (USDA, CDC, 4 -H) Research on zoonotic diseases, how changes in environment affect health of animals and humans, etc.
One Health in Action Global Security Health Agenda: an effort by nations, international organizations and civil societies to accelerate progress toward One Health Animal-Human Interface Officers: work with partners in developing countries to help promote and conduct One Health work World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Collaborating Center for Emerging and Re-emerging Zoonotic Diseases Research on zoonotic diseases, how changes in environment affect health of animals and humans, etc.
