ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Ford/NHTSA FMVSS 225 NPRM Meeting May 6, 2015 12: 30 – 1: 30 pm Eric Eiswerth Ford Automotive Safety Vehicle Homologation & Compliance

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Agenda • • • Lower Anchor

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Agenda • • • Lower Anchor Ease of Use • Depth Gauge • Angle Gauge • Force Gauge • Ford Test Data Upper Anchor Zone Changes • Package Tray Wrap-Around • Under Seat Ford Generic Product Cycle

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Lower Anchor Depth & Angle Gauges

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Lower Anchor Depth & Angle Gauges Design Factors: Lower Anchor Accessibility: • Softer foam or gaps between cushion and back improves lower anchor access Appearance/Seat Comfort/Craftsmanship Attributes: Consistent lower edge of the seat back with an interference or line-to-line fit to the seat cushion • Stiff seat foam with tight trim cover and concealed anchors improves appearance and seat comfort Manufacturing Factors: Process Variations: Seat foam is geometrically consistent, but the density can vary due to manufacturing process • Trim process is manual and variable • 20 mm regulatory criteria will require a manufacturer to determine a statistical based design margin which we expect to be extremely difficult to incorporate to the manual process Product Factors: Product Changes: Most Ford vehicles will require design changes to seat foam & trim and/or lower anchorages

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Seat Cushion and Back Design Changes

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Seat Cushion and Back Design Changes Seat cushion foam tools • Any voids are included in the foam tool – secondary processes to trim out local areas are not used • Each foam tool can produce approximately 30, 000 seats per year • Typical seat cushion tool cost is [ ] for the first cavity, [ ] for additional cavities • Seat trim development is a manual, iterative process that takes 15 – 20 weeks to achieve appearance targets For example, a vehicle with 300 k production volume may require 3 unique foam tools for: - Seat Cushion - RH Seat Back - LH Seat Back At least ten cavities of each tool are required to support volume, resulting in approximately [ ] foam tooling cost. ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Lower Anchor Force Gauge Ford procedure

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Lower Anchor Force Gauge Ford procedure and gauge is similar to the NPRM proposal • Ford does not limit or record the application force angle • 5 trials are conducted, highest/lowest values are deleted, then the remaining 3 values are averaged • Our data shows that with 5 trials, the range between minimum and maximum can be greater than 50% of the average (poor Gauge R&R), but the 40 lb criteria is reasonable based on our test data

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Upper Anchor Zone Changes Package Tray

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Upper Anchor Zone Changes Package Tray Wrap-Around • Package tray is a component of body structure and is typically not changed except for NEW vehicle development • MAJOR and MINOR freshening programs typically involve front/rear fascia, body exterior sheet metal and interior – not underbody or body structure • Changes to existing sedan vehicles to meet the proposed 165 mm zone would require significant out-of-cadence design changes

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Upper Anchor Zone Changes Under Seat

ONE FORD ONE TEAM ONE PLAN ONE GOAL Upper Anchor Zone Changes Under Seat Location SUV/CUV Tether Anchors are often located at the base of the seat, very close to the plane through the rearmost point of the bottom of the seat as defined in the NPRM 5/6/2015 13
