The One Billion Trees Overview The 1 BT Fund is made of two elements: Grants to establish trees and Partnerships to better enable tree planting Total of $238 m over 3 years (2018 to 2021) Grants Long form application Specific Criteria Contributes to cost of planting or native regeneration Broad Criteria Projects and initiatives that deliver broader outcomes Integrated projects More flexible than previous schemes Strong focus on site suitability and likelihood of success Partnerships Short form application Co-funding from applicant(s) Large-scale native restoration
Direct Grants for establishing trees
Direct Grants for trees Right tree, right place In addition to general eligibility criteria the application will need to demonstrate that the proposed activity adheres to the principle of ‘right tree, right place, right purpose’ Provide evidence that the proposed activity is: Suitable for the site Map and photos of the proposed site to provide visual evidence and clearly show where the planting or native regeneration will take place Suitable for the landscape Farm environment plan, evidence of council support, or comparable technical assessment (if you have one) Likely to succeed Management Plan, (this is required as part of the application) detailing how the activity will be managed

Grants for trees Process for applications Application considered Research and planning 2 Species choice and placement matches the site, infrastructure needs considered, etc. Te Uru Rākau will check the application to make sure the proposed activity meets criteria, is feasible and in line with good practice. Application accepted Submit application Applications can be submitted at any time. Ensure it is complete and evidence is attached. Te Uru Rākau will inform the applicant of their success (or not) and send out a Funding Agreement Grant Agreement signed Applicant signs the Funding Agreement and commences with their project.
Grants for trees Milestones and minimum standards Most participants will receive their grant in 2 milestone payments, more complex projects may have 3 milestones Upfront 30% Grant Agreement signed and returned Evidence of seedlings or works contracted OR Evidence of planting or works completed Establishment 50% (70%) Maintenance 20% Meet a minimum stocking rate of 750* sph for all grant categories and species Meet a minimum stocking rate of 400 sph for exotics and 600 sph for natives Visually verifiable and free from significant pest and weed competition NES-PF evidence provided, e. g. notice or resource consent (where applicable)

Partnerships to enable tree planting Overview Partnerships will help lay the foundations to enable the long-term success of the 1 BT Programme Landowner collectives NGOs Councils Industry organisations $140 m fund over 3 years for: Projects and initiatives to enable and support increased tree planting and achieve broader outcomes Integrated projects Special environmental projects with DOC, NGOs, councils, etc. (e. g. Matariki Tu Rākau – Defence Force commemorative plantings)
Partnerships to enable tree planting Priority enabling activities Labour, workforce & skills Increase availability of labour to grow, plant and maintain trees, and upskill the workforce The Government has identified five priority activities for Partnership investment Seedling & nursery production Strategically scale-up seedling production to match demand improve efficiency of production Science & innovation Improve knowledge, expertise, and technology Projects need to deliver on wider outcomes All Partnership projects will involve cofunding (~50%) Information & advice Support advice and technical information to help landowners and communities make well-informed decisions Landscape and catchment restoration Support for costs associated with high ecological value or complex plantings e. g. feasibility studies, co-ordination and development, etc.
Partnerships to enable tree planting Process for applications Pre-application enquiry Send your idea to 1 BT@mpi. govt. nz and an Investment Adviser will be in contact to discuss Expression of Interest accepted Te Uru Rākau Investment Adviser will advise whether the EOI qualifies to move to a formal application. Formal application finalised Expression of Interest EOI’s can be submitted at any time. Ensure it is complete and includes relevant evidence Te Uru Rākau will request further detailed information to inform final decision making, e. g. business plan Partnership Agreement If the application is approved we’ll establish project milestones and a Funding Agreement
