“One Another” Verses of the Bible • • • Books: 21 of 27 – 78% Chapters: 139 of 260 = 53% Verses: 5, 190 of 7, 967 = 65% Words: 121, 145 of 180, 506 = 67% Any way one measures it, (Books, Chapters, Verses, or Words) over half of the New Testament has to do with how to live after one becomes a Christian.
“One Another” Verses of the Bible • God wants each one of His children to help all other of His children remain faithful • A profitable study is to be had in the study and application of them.
PRAYER • We need to pray (1 Thess. 5: 17; Luke 11: 1 -4; Matthew 6: 6 -15). Our Lord and His inspired apostles teach us how. Reverence, honor of God, spirituality; dependence upon Him, faith, with forgiveness seeking forgiveness • We need to pray for others (2 Thess. 1: 1 -3; 1 Timothy 2: 1 -3). • We need others to pray for us (2 Thess. 3: 12;
• We need to pray for one another (James 5: 16) Mutually beneficial • James 5: 16 – “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
QUESTIONS ABOUT PRAYER • How often should I pray? We ask for daily bread. What does that tell us about prayer? (1 Thess. 5: 18) • Where should I pray? (1 Timothy 2: 8; Acts 2: 42) • Where and when did Jesus pray? With His disciples. At times when He was alone. (Luke 5: 16; Matthew 19: 13; Luke 9: 28). Wilderness, on a mountain with disciples; in a garden • When should we pray “in our closet? ” • When is a public prayer wrong? If done to be seen of men. (Matthew 6: 1 -7).
BENEFITS OF PRAYER • 1. Communion with God • 2. Forgiveness • 3. Comfort • 4. Strength we need to meet personal challenges • 5. Courage
EXHORT (encourage) ONE ANOTHER • ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER. (2) • Hebrews 3: 12 -13 – “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort (ENCOURAGE) one another daily, while it is called ‘Today, ’ lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. ” • (Acts 9: 26 -28). “He was with them at Jerusalem, coming in and going out. ” • Brethren were to encourage one another. (Gal. 6: 2; Heb. 10: 24 -25)
BUILD ONE ANOTHER • BUILD ONE ANOTHER UP. (3) • 1 Thessalonians 5: 9 -11 – “For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. ” • Romans 14: 19 – “Therefore let us pursue things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. ”
BUILD ONE ANOTHER • Strive to build one another up. . . not tear one another down. • As Christians are lively stones built up together a spiritual house, we should endeavor to promote the good of the whole church by promoting good in one another. (1 Corinthians 13: 4 -7). “Love suffers long…and is kind…does not parade itself is not puffed up…bears all things, believes all things, endures all things…”
CONFESS OUR FAULTS TO ONE ANOTHER • CONFESS OUR FAULTS TO ONE ANOTHER. (4) • James 5: 16 – “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. ” • Confessing our sins - such as resentment, a grudge, lack of forgiveness, etc. – may even lead to the healing of physical ailments because of the stress brought about by these sins. What do you think about this statement?
CONFESS OUR FAULTS TO ONE ANOTHER • Christ has made it possible for us to go directly to God forgiveness. But confessing our sins to one another still has an important place in the life of the church. • If we have sinned against an individual, we must ask that person forgive us. • If our sin has affected the church, we must confess it publicly.
CONFESS OUR FAULTS TO ONE ANOTHER • If we need loving support as we struggle with a sin, we should confess the sin to those who are able to provide that support. • If after confessing a private sin to God we still don't feel his forgiveness, we may wish to confess that sin to a fellow believer and hear him or her reassure us of God's pardon.
LOVE ONE ANOTHER • LOVE ONE ANOTHER. (5) • John 13: 34 -35 – “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. "
LOVE ONE ANOTHER • The disciples of Christ were known by this love which they bore to each other. • Tertullian, in his Apology, gives us their very words: "See, said they, how they love one another, and are ready to lay down their lives for each other. "
LOVE ONE ANOTHER • “Of all the instances of Christ's love to his disciples, which they had already experienced during the time he went in and out among them. He spoke kindly to them, concerned himself heartily for them, and for their welfare, instructed, counseled, and comforted them, prayed with them and for them, vindicated them when they were accused, took their part when they were run down, and publicly owned them to be dearer to him that his mother, or sister, or brother. He reproved them for what was amiss, and Yet compassionately bore with their failings, excused them, made the best of them, and passed by many an oversight” Matthew Henry, (18 October 1662 – 22 June 1714) was an English commentator on the Bible
LOVE ONE ANOTHER PASSAGES • Love one another is a commandment. The standard is the love of Christ for us!(John 13: 34; 15: 12, 17) • Love is a debt (Rom. 13: 8) • Christians are to abound in love. (1 Thess. 3: 12) • It is taught by God (1 Thess. 4: 9)
LOVE ONE ANOTHER PASSAGES • It is warm love. (1 Peter 1: 22) • The message was from the beginning (1 John 3: 11) • Love is of God (1 John 4: 7, 11) • Love is walking in the commandments of God (2 John 5)
LOVE ONE ANOTHER PASSAGES • Through love, serve one another (Gal. 5: 13) • Tolerate one another in love (Eph. 4: 2) • Greet one another with a kiss of love (1 Peter 5: 14) • Be devoted to one another in love (Romans 12: 10)
HONOR ONE ANOTHER • BE DEVOTED TO ONE ANOTHER, HONOR ONE ANOTHER. (6) • Romans 12: 10 – “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; • The word used here occurs no where else in the New Testament. It properly denotes tender affection, such as what subsists between parents and children; and it means that Christians should have similar feelings toward each other, as belonging to the same family, and as united in the same principles and interests.
HONOR ONE ANOTHER • To honor means to give a person high value and respect. • As Christians, we honor people because: • Because they have been created in God's image, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ, and they have a unique contribution to make to Christ's church Philippians 2: 3 – “Let each esteem others better than themselves. ”
HONOR IN THE BIBLE • Honor the Lord with thy substance (Proverbs 3: 9) Combined with trust and fear in Proverbs 3. • Honor the Son and Father (John 5: 23; Heb. 2: 7 -9; Rev. 19: 7 (translated glory in NKJV) • Jesus honored the Father (John 8: 49). They dishonored Jesus by saying He had a demon and was a Samaritan. • Priests honored in O. T. (Heb. 5: 4)
HONOR IN THE BIBLE • Honor thy father and mother (Exodus 20: 12; Eph. 6: 2) • Elders ruling well to be honored (1 Tim. 5: 17) • Honor the king (1 Peter 2: 17) • Honor all people (1 Peter 2: 17). • Honor in heaven “who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality” (Romans 2: 7; 1 Peter 1: 7)
SERVE ONE ANOTHER • SERVE ONE ANOTHER. (7) • Galatians 5: 13 – “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. ”
SERVE ONE ANOTHER • Faith works, helps, serves others. • Serving others is a proper manifestation of love. • Galatians 6: 10 – “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” • Jesus served others
OTHER RELATED PASSAGES TO SERVING OTHERS • Jesus washed the disciples feet (John 13: 117). He taught His disciples to “wash one another’s feet. ” He also taught “If you know these things blessed are you if you do them. ” • How does this apply to us? How can we wash “one another’s feet? ” • Why did Jesus require Peter to allow his feet to be washed?

BEAR WITH ONE ANOTHER • BEAR WITH ONE ANOTHER. (8) • A. Colossians 3: 12 -13 – “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. “
SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER • SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER. (9) • A. Ephesians 5: 19 -21 – “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God. “ • The question becomes. . . “Are you willing to place the interests and desires of others ahead of your own in Jesus' name
SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER • Submissive roles for Christians: • 1. To God (1 Peter 5: 6) • 2. To government (Romans 13: 1) • 3. To elders (Heb. 13: 7, 17) • 4. Wives to husbands (Eph. 5: 22) • 5. Children to parents (Eph. 6: 1) • 6. Younger to elder (1 Peter 5: 5) • 6. To one another (Eph. 5: 21, 1 Peter 5: 5)
STIR ONE ANOTHER • STIR (Spur) ONE ANOTHER ON. (10) • Hebrews 10: 24 – “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good work” • We are in this Christian life together. • Christians need one another on a daily basis. Don’t try to go at it alone. . . you have brethren who will help you. You need brethren. . . and brethren need you. Spur one another on!
BE HOSPITABLE TO ONE ANOTHER • BE HOSPITABLE TO ONE ANOTHER. (11) • A. 1 Peter 4: 8 -9 – “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. ”
BE HOSPITABLE TO ONE ANOTHER • Being hospitable is different from social entertaining. • Entertaining focuses on the host -- the home must be spotless; the food must be well prepared and abundant; the host must appear relaxed and good-natured. • Hospitality, in contrast, focuses on the guests. It is a love of strangers.
GREET ONE ANOTHER • GREET ONE ANOTHER. (12) • A. Romans 16: 16 – “Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you. ” • B. In those early times the kiss on the cheek, as a token of peace, friendship, and brotherly love, was frequent among all people; and the Christians used it appropriately.
GREET ONE ANOTHER • Paul often sent greetings to the brethren “Greet every saint in Christ Jesus, the brethren who are with me greet you. All the saints greet you…. ” (Phil. 4: 21 -22). • “Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers” (Philemon 1: 23 -24).
GREET ONE ANOTHER • “Greet Amplias, my beloved in the Lord” • “Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker, in Christ…” • “Greet Herodion, my countryman…” • “Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus” (Romans 16: 2 -16) Greetings are sent to about 24 individuals as well as families, and local churches.
