F-1 & J-1 Employment Reminders: On-Campus Employment In order to be employed at Syracuse University: n n Work must provide direct services to the University’s students Syracuse University (SU) students may only work on the SU campus n www. sujobopps. com International students are ineligible for Federal Work Study jobs You must be enrolled full-time or have submitted a request to study less than full-time (e. g. , reduced course load, last semester of study) n n Graduate: 9 credit hours; Undergraduate: 12 credit hours You must receive a job offer and have permission to work n n SU student athletes must complete the Student-Athlete Employment Clearance Process at the Manley Field House Compliance Office Sponsored J-1 students (e. g. Fulbright, Ford Foundation) must obtain approval letter from your sponsor for on-campus employment Complete I-9 Process at Student Employment (210 Steele Hall) before starting work Obtain a Social Security Number from Social Security Administration
F-1 & J-1 Employment Reminders On-Campus Employment Limitations: n You may only work 20 hours/ week while school is in session n May hold more than one job on campus as long as the cumulative number of hours worked does not exceed 20 hrs/week On-campus employment and CPT: Limited to 20 hours of work a week cumulatively You may work full-time (typically 40 hours/week) during authorized school breaks. n Official Syracuse University Breaks § § Summer – May 11 – August 27, 2017 Thanksgiving – November 19 – 26, 2017 Winter – December 16, 2017 to January 15, 2018 Spring – March 11 – 18, 2018 Off-Campus Employment is only authorized for: n n n Case Center COOP – On-Campus Employment at an Off-Campus Location F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) Severe Economic Hardship Employment J-1 Academic Training
The I-9 Process for SU n Have your future employer complete Section A of the Employer Verification Form and print on department letterhead n Bring the following documents to Student Employment, 210 Steele Hall in order to complete the I-9 process: n n Employer Verification Form from on-campus employer (HR will need to complete Section B to verify the completion of the I-9 Process) Original I-20/DS-2019, passport, I-94 card, & Social Security Card, if you have one If you are a SU Athlete, also submit a copy of your completed Student Athlete Compliance Form If you are a sponsored J-1 student (Fulbright, Ford Fellow, etc. ), also submit a letter from J-1 sponsor approving on-campus work
Obtaining a Social Security Number: Steps 1 - 3 To Apply for a Social Security Number you must: Step 1: Attend the Social Security Seminar Step 2: Complete I-9 Employment Verification with Student Employment Office in 210 Steele Hall (for your convenience, Steps 2 and 3 can be done simultaneously). Step 3: To be eligible to apply for a Social Security Number, you must be employed or have a promise of employment, which is shown by the Employer Verification Form. § § § § Your host department must complete Part A of the Employer Verification Form and print it out on their department letterhead. Next, Student Employment in 210 Steele Hall must complete Part B of the Employer Verification Form to verify completion of the I-9. The Slutzker Center must complete Part C of the Employer Verification Form to certify your valid F-1/J-1 student status and eligibility for a SSN. *NOTE: If you are applying for a SSN on the basis of Off-Campus Work Authorization (CPT, OPT, AT), you should have your employer complete Section A of the Off-Campus F-1/J-1 Student Employer Verification Form and have the Slutzker Center complete Section B

Obtaining a Social Security Number: Steps 4 - 5 § § § Step 4: Before you can submit an application to the Social Security Administration for a SSN, you must have entered the U. S. on your current visa more than 10 days ago and be registered in the SEVIS System for at least 3 days and wait for the SCIS to give you a date to go down to the Social Security Administration Office. Step 5: Apply for the SSN - Go to the Social Security Administration on the 4 th floor, Federal Building, 100 S. Clinton Street, Syracuse, NY. Take with you the following: § § The complete Employer Verification Form; Your original passport, visa and I-94 card; and Your most recent, stamped I-20/DS-2019 Make sure to provide a valid mailing address on the SSN Application

Obtaining a Social Security Number: Steps 6 - 8 Step 6: When applying for the SSN, request a RECEIPT for your application. Step 7: Upon receiving your Social Security Card by mail, submit a copy of your card to the SU Payroll Office. Step 8: For tax purposes, complete the Non-Resident Alien Information Form (NRAIF) online at https: //fnis. windstar. cc/syracuse/ § § § To obtain access, email Payroll at payroll@syr. edu with your SU ID number. NRAIF is necessary to verify eligibility for a tax withholding exemption All questions about NRAIF should be directed to SU Payroll
Reminders n To download forms and find more information on immigration topics, access the Slutzker Center website at: http: //international. syr. edu/ n n n Keep all of your immigration and employment documents together and in a safe place—you may need them for future immigration applications (e. g. , OPT or J-1 Academic Training) -- I-20/DS-2019, Passport, Visa with I-94 card -- Social Security Card -- Employment Contract, Pay Stubs Check all of the expiration dates on your documents and be aware of when they expire. -- Your I-9 is valid until your I-20/DS-2019 program end date. If you shorten/extend your program, verify with the Slutzker Center that your document will be submitted to HR for an I-9 update. Plan ahead and make necessary appointments to renew and update documents
