Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character.
the writer states the character’s traits or characteristics. Direct Characterization – the writer depends on the reader to draw conclusions about the character’s traits. Or, sometimes, the writer tells what other participants in the story say and think about the character. Indirect Characterization –
Direct or Indirect Characterization? The woman was wild looking: her hair was knotted everywhere, her green eyes flashing this way and that and she wore rags as if they were an elegant gown.

To expand on our understanding of characterization, add the following to your notes:
In order to fully analyze a character, the reader must take into consideration the character’s: Ø Physical appearance – how does the character look and how does that help the reader to understanding them better? Ø Actions – what does the character do in the story that lends further understanding of them? Ø Thoughts – how does the character think? (this can include the character’s plans)
� Quotes – what does the character say? (or, what would the character say? ) � Emotions/Feelings – how does the character feel? � Weaknesses – what are the character’s weaknesses? (what stops them from accomplishing goals? ) � Strengths – what are the character’s strengths? (what helps them accomplish goals? )
