OMBUDSMAN OFFICE Ombuds serve as a neutral, independent resource to discuss sensitive issues confidentially and informally. Ombuds can help individuals: • Unsure where to begin to address a problem • Unsure which policies or procedures relate to a situation • Who feel policies or procedures have been applied unfairly or inappropriately • Who have tried regular channels for resolving concern(s) and have been unsuccessful

CONGRATULATIONS Academic Senate helped create the ombudsman service Why? 2012 -13 grievance procedure needed overhauling, especially for career-line faculty. Academic Freedom & Faculty Rights Committee (SCAFFR, Policy 6010) and Consolidated Hearing Committee (SCHC, Policy 6 -010) Ombudsman Office created a “safe space” and resource clearinghouse Informal resolution as alternative to grievance

Ombuds will: listen find information that might help figure out if another person/office on campus can help work with the visitor to develop solutions assist with conflict resolution & communication coaching Ombuds will not: investigate advocate or act as a judge force anyone to take an action participate in any formal proceeding serve as an office of legal notice Come with a problem, leave with a
