Olentangy Local Schools Educational Options Advanced Placement Courses Bobbie Knotts Guidance Counselor - Liberty High School
Advanced Placement (AP) Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. AP courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses. At the end of course, students take AP Exams— standardized exams that measure how well students have mastered college-level course work. Students who do well on AP Exams can earn credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college. 29
What Are AP Courses Like? AP courses typically demand more of students than regular or honors courses. Classes tend to be fast-paced and cover more material than typical high school classes. More time, inside and outside of the classroom, is required to complete lessons, assignments and homework. Students should be prepared to work independently on summer projects. AP teachers expect their students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively. 30
AP EXAMS Students are expected to take the AP exams in May. --Exams are 2 -3 hours --The current exam fee is $92 per exam --Exams consist of multiple choice and freeresponse (essay) questions --Exams are graded on a scale of 1 -5 Qualifying AP exam scores are used by some colleges to exempt students from introductory course work (**Each college/university has its own policy, which is available on the College. Board website: www. collegeboard. com/ap/creditpolicy).
AP and College Admission Colleges rank “Grades in college prep courses” and “Strength of curriculum” as the top two factors in the admission decision. * 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions. ** “” We look favorably on “We look favorably on students who have taken AP courses. The presence of AP courses is a sign that a student has chosen to challenge him/herself. ” —Admission Officer hosen to challenge him/herself. ” * 2009 State of College Admission, NACAC —Admission Officer ** Unpublished institutional research, Crux Research Inc. March 2007 32
AP Advantages & Considerations Improves likelihood of graduating from college in four years Increases students’ eligibility for scholarships Allow students to gain the edge in college preparation Helps students stand out in the college admission process The scheduling of an AP class is an important academic decision that should be made collaboratively between teachers, parents, counselors and administrators. AP courses should be taken if there is a sincere interest in the subject. Parents should guide their child(ren) to select AP courses that play to their strengths and interests.
Learn More See your child’s guidance counselor for more information about the AP program. For more information about AP courses and exams visit www. collegeboard. com/apstudents. 34
