“OLD IRONSIDES" • First launched in 1797 by the US Navy to provide protection

“OLD IRONSIDES" • First launched in 1797 by the US Navy to provide protection for merchant shipping during the Quasi War with France • Best known for defeat of 5 British war ships during the War of 1812 for which she earned her name • Served as training ship during the Civil War • Retired from active service in 1881 • Currently used to promote understanding of Navy’s role during both war and peace times
