Ohio University has suspended all Interfraternity Council fraternities on its Athens campus after "troubling allegations" of hazing, university officials said in a release Thursday. Seven IFC chapters were accused of hazing new members, the school said, and will be investigated for possible violations of the university's student code. All IFC chapters will be prohibited from engaging in any events, meetings and activities because of “growing concern elevated by allegations of hazing. ” The university expelled the Sigma Pi fraternity in April after a student was found dead in the fraternity house. While pledging the fraternity, 18 -year-old Collin Wiant was allegedly made to undergo severe hazing, including beaten with a belt, punched, made to take drugs, forced to drink a gallon of alcohol in an hour and deprived of sleep. A toxicology report showed Wiant died of "asphyxiation due to nitrous oxide ingestion. " Canisters of nitrous oxide are sometimes used as inhalants, known as "whippets. "

In Other News n n Hong Kong's leader has invoked rarely-used emergency powers to ban people from wearing face masks during public assemblies, a move likely to infuriate thousands of mainly young people involved in the monthslong protest movement. The ban will come into effect on October 5. Leaders said the order to enact the "Prohibition On Face Covering Regulation" was a “necessary decision…that are now in a rather extensive and serious public danger. It is essential for us to stop violence and restore calm to society as soon as possible. We believe the new law will create a deterrent effect against masked protesters and rioters. ” The vast majority of people who have attended the city's recent pro-democracy demonstrations do so wearing masks to hide their identity, fearful that they could be arrested or targeted by police. Gas masks and respirators to protect against tear gas, which is often used by authorities to disperse unauthorized gatherings, have also become commonplace. Text messages released on Thursday between US diplomats and a senior Ukrainian aide show a potential Ukrainian investigation into the 2016 election was linked to a desired meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. The text messages, which were released by the House Intelligence Committee, underscore how President Trump's personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, was closely connected to US policy on Ukraine and was involved in setting up the July 25 phone call between President Trump and Zelensky, in which President Trump also urged an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.
