BCI • BCI stands for Bureau of Criminal Investigation, a department of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office • Go to: http: //www. ohioattorneygeneral. gov/backgroundcheck for more information

How do I receive a BCI check? • Go to website to find approved vendor in your zip code • You must go in person (call for an appointment) • Bring government issued photo ID and payment • Have results sent to: The PEER Center 750 E Broad St STE 100 Columbus, OH 43205

Do I need an FBI check? • If you are a “multi-state offender” you will need an FBI check • A multi-state offender has a criminal record in a state other than Ohio • Your BCI check will list whether or not you are a multi-state offender

Reason Codes • BCI – “Reason Codes” are designated by the Ohio Revised Code. We do not have our own. – Use "NO ORC" code ("other: please type specific reason“) – For reason, use "Ohio Peer Recovery Supporter Certification“ – Have results sent to TPC • FBI – Use code "NCPA/VA" which is the "Volunteer with Children Act. " – Peer recovery supporters will not be working with children, but this code will run the correct type of background check. – Have results sent to TPC

FAQs If I am using work experience in place of training, do I still have to take the exam and the E-Based Academy courses? Yes. What if I can’t prove my work experience? Then you must complete the 40 hour training. Can I re-use a BCI report I had done for another purpose? Yes, if you have the results sent to TPC and the report is less than 30 days old. How much is a BCI check? Prices vary, on average around $35. If you also need an FBI check, the total will be higher. Reimbursement might be available through the CFPT program if you are currently unemployed. What if I fail the exam? Contact Ohio. MHAS to arrange to re-take the exam in person.

FAQs I’m having problems with E-Based Academy. Can you help me? No, you must contact the E-Based Academy help desk. Information is available on the site. Neither TPC nor Ohio. MHAS can assist you. How long is the certification good for? 2 years. How do I get it renewed? You must obtain 30 CEUs before the expiration date on your certification and fill out the required paperwork. Only CEUs obtained after your certification was issued count towards re-certification. How long does the certification process take? It varies. Once your completed paperwork is received by TPC, it is on average, around 2 months. Can the process be expedited? No, the process cannot be expedited.

FAQs Once I am certified, who can I provide peer support to? You can only provide services to people who share your lived experience. Does certification guarantee employment? No. This is a certification, not a job application. You are not applying for employment with the state of Ohio. Will you help me find a job? No, we do not provide job placement or employment services.
