OER AND BLACKBOARD Improving affordability, access and student success by supporting Open Educational Resources 9/26/2018
Quick Overview of OER • OER (Open Educational Resources) are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others
Why OER? • Support students by reducing their costs • Provide equitable access to required content • Stat that supports this: according to the The Chronicle of Higher Education 7 out of 10 students didn’t purchase a textbook due to cost; • Textbook Reserves: an antiquated concept gone awry • Keep up with higher education practices
OER and MMC • Perfect match for hybrid and fully online courses • For traditional teaching, can be used to improve educational content and excite students • OER and MMC and the immediate future: Goal is to create and promote courses that champion OER and make education more affordable and attainable • OER and MMC and the not so distant future: Establish an OER committee to help foster and implement an MMC OER initiative for courses as well as create an OER Printing Press and an OER Publishing House.
