Types of Ocean Pollution • Oil • Toxic Materials (such as heavy metals and slowly degrading chemicals) • Sewage • Garbage
History Ocean pollution is a major problem all around the world, that is not only affecting the oceans, but the rest of the planet, too. It may seem that pollution of the ocean is only affecting marine animals but it is, in fact, severely damaging to humans too. The Earth is made up of about 71% of water. And where do we humans get our water from? The Earth. -Think about it. If Our water is being polluted, we are too. Oil and water don’t mix and neither should pollution and Earth!
Preventing Ocean Pollution • What can we do to lessen/ prevent ocean pollution? • We cannot fully prevent ocean pollution but, some things we can do are: • Drive cars less! Smoke coming from our cars turns into acid rain, which ends up in the ocean. Walk everywhere more! It will help protect the planet, and keep you healthier! “Move your fat feet!”-Marian Weber(volleyball season fall 2009) (: • Dispose of toxic chemicals properly! • Recycle!-”Reduce, Re-use, Recycle!” as Bob the Builder would say. You will get more out of the products you have and less will end up in the oceans!
Preventing Ocean Pollution (Continued) • The EPA, (Environmental Protection Agency) has an emergency response team. They respond to oil spills and anything else harmful to the environment. • To clean it up, they use an environment-safe petroleum remediation product. (PRP) Which is basically a beeswax microsphere that absorbs hydrocarbons.
The 2011 Oil Spill • In March 2011, a terrible tragedy occurred. More than 800 tons of oil leaked out of the Malteseregistered ship in the southern Atlantic ocean near Nightingale Island. The ship broke in half and an additional 800 tons of oil began spilling out of the ship. “The scene at Nightingale is dreadful, as there is an oil slick encircling the island, ” Trevor Glass, a local conservation officer, said in a statement. • The surface oil has been cleaned away since. The government is telling everyone that it’s all better
The 2011 Oil Spill (Continued) and they got it all out of the ocean, but little do we know, there are still layers and layers of oil in the ocean. Many marine animals were severely affected by this spill. In fact, about 20, 000 penguins were “oiled” as a result of the spill. <“Three oiled rockhopper penguins on the Tristan da Cunha island chain. Thousands of endangered penguins have been coated with oil after a cargo ship ran aground and broke up on a remote British South Atlantic territory. ”
