Why is it important to focus in occupation? § It is vital to remember to keep occupation at the heart of practice because it is being concerned with occupation that sets us apart as a profession – it is our USP (unique selling point). § So while many can claim to be person-centred only occupational therapy personnel can claim to be occupation centred. § And the claim can only legitimately be made when it is true! 4
A distal or a proximal focus on occupation? A distal focus on occupation A doctor’s focus on medication to reduce symptoms and eventually enable participation A physiotherapist’s focus on gait to enable walking and eventually enable participation An occupational therapist’s focus on getting washed and dressed so the person can get washed and dressed A proximal focus on occupation 5
The six elements of an occupation centred practice process Occupation-centred practice is where assessments, interventions and evaluations are based and focused upon occupation in collaboration with the person, group or community (and with appropriate awareness of risk). 1. occupational strengths & needs identified (along with relevant background information); 2. priority occupations (identified by person, family, relevant others) assessed; 3. goals set in collaboration with person & relevant others; 4. reasons for problems of occupational performance clarified (considering person, environment & occupational influences on performance); 5. intervention enables occupational engagement & performance; & 6. outcomes measured in relation to satisfaction, engagement, 7. occupational performance, participation & wellbeing. 6
Strengths and challenges in your service § What are the strengths within your current service relating to occupation centred practice? § What areas might be further developed? § What might be the challenges associated with this? § How might these be overcome? 7
