OCCLUSION Occlusion is any contact between the incising

OCCLUSION Occlusion is any contact between the incising or masticating surface of the upper and lower teeth in a static position

Concepts of occlusion • Balanced occlusion • Monoplane occlusion • Lingualized occlusion

Balanced occlusion • Balanced occlusion in complete denture can be defined as stable simultaneous contact of the opposing upper and lower teeth in centric relation position and continuous smooth bilateral gliding from this position to any eccentric position within the normal range of mandibular functioning

Monoplane occlusion or non –balanced occlusion • It is characterized by occlusal contact of maxillary and mandibular teeth initally in maximum intercuspation followed by disocclusion of the posterior teeth as a result of their arrangment in single plane and contact of the anterior teeth during movement of the mandible

Lingualized occlusion • Occlusal contacts of the maxillary lingual cusp of the posterior teeth initially with the occlusal surface and marginal ridges of mandibular teeth in maximum intercuspation and continuous contact of the lingual cusp with the mandibular teeth during various movements of the mandible that permit light contact of anterior teeth as they glide over each other

Theories of occlusion • Bonwill’s equilateral triangular theory • Monson theory • Conical theory

Laws of balanced occlusion condylar guidance Incisal guidance Plane of occlusion Compensating curve Cuspal inclination

Curve of spee • Anatomic curvature of the occlusal aligment of teeth beginning at the tip of the lower canine and following the buccal cusp of the natural premolars and molars , continuing to the anterior border of the ramus

Monsoon theory • The curve of occlusion in which each cusp and incisal edge touches or conforms to a segment of the sphere of 8 inches in diameter with its centre at the region of the glabella
