2. 1. Cr. EAMA Initiative Includes strong partners. 3.
It is based on the good scientific curriculum. Cr. EAMA Initiative Croatian Eastern-Adriatic MIT disciplinary Archaeology Initiative Formed to establish and integrate the archaeological MIT disciplinary scientific research community in Croatia. • • • University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture: 9 University of Zagreb, Faculty of Sciences (PMF): 5 Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts: 3 Institute for Anthropological Research: 2 Croatian Natural History Museum: 1 Cultural Centre Vela Luka: 1 Nothing is impossible !

Demonstrates originality original idea. The main challenge/goal of the project ! Bridging the gap between science & society UCAM, UNIPI & Cr. EAMA Initiative will develop research capacity required to provide answers to a number of relevant questions related to the better understanding of EU past in last 20 000 to 30 000 years. We were particularly challenged to provide a philosophical framework that would "reshape" classical approaches by offering some new concepts of collaboration between humanities and natural sciences. MIT disciplinary approach New values & ideas …
Specific goals of the project ! Objective 1. To establish and integrate the existing MIT disciplinary scientific research community in Croatia related to the Sciences of the Past under the umbrella of Cr. EAMA Initiative 'Smart Integration of Genetics with Sciences of the Past in Croatia: Minding and Mending The Gap' Responds to the call scientific excellence. Laboratory for a. DNA and Archaeogenetics analyses ! § Know how: provided by the Mend. The. Gap project § Physical construction: infrastructural projects
Specific goals of the project ! Objective 2. To upgrade and intensify scientific research of Croatian Scientists involved in the Cr. EAMA Initiative by utilising recent methodological achievements in Genetics and Biology To stimulate related Archaeogenetics research Responds to the call scientific excellence.

Objective 3. To to foster integration of the Cr. EAMA Initiative into the ERA by intensifying; 1. Scientific communications -invited seminars, workshops, 2. Visibility -published gold open-access papers, conferences, creation of interesting and educational web content, 3. Collaborations -field summer schools, joint papers, 4. Submission of grant applications, -to fund large-scale international projects
Offers prospective commercial opportunity. Objective 4. To commercialise and integrate the Cr. EAMA Initiative research with the needs of society (local community) at the level of local (Korčula Island, Zagreb), regional (Dalmatia, Zagreb area), national (Croatia), European (web) and global (web) level. Archaeolink -> Vela Spila (Vela Luka) Ideal model for Croatia
Integrating the Sciences of the Past with sustainable tourism Analyses of heritage potentials, local implementation strategies, raising awareness, quantification of impact
Vela spila – “open-minded” archaeology – since late 1990 s - late 1980 s – discovery of the first “pre-pottery” deposits (Early Holocene) - small-scale research until late 1990 s - excavation of Pleistocene deposits - lack of “traditional” archaeological finds in deeper layers - need for new research methods (multi- and interdisciplinary approach) horizontal stratigraphy (excavation grid) vertical stratigraphy (e. g. dumpy level)
VELA SPILA Korčula Holocene Upper Pleistocene
Integrating the Sciences of the Past with sustainable tourism § educate, encourage and engage local community to attract tourists using specifics of the local heritage § site-specific strategies for implementation of sustainable tourism
Pert chart of the Mend. The. Gap project
It is based on the honest motivation.
SWOT analysis for the current status of Sciences of the Past in Croatia Strengths - Individual scientific excellence in many disciplines - Motivation for MIT disciplinary research - Strong interest for international collaborations -Abundance of relevant/attractive archaeological sites, with high potential for future economic development in the cultural heritage sector -Abundance of archaeological artefacts, biofacts and features
Weaknesses -Large number of fragmented and small research units (<4 researchers) in Croatia - Lack of participation in MIT disciplinary research - Low publication record, particularly in high-impact journals - Low participation in EU projects (FP 6 & 7, etc. ) - Poor financial and administrative research support -Lack of access to cutting age technologies relevant to the Sciences of the Past - Low number of innovations* -Lack of connection between industry/commercial entities, SMEs and scientific research
Opportunities -Establishment of a MIT disciplinary research group operating at ERA level -Capacity to use cutting age technologies in analysing existing artefacts, biofacts and features -Increased number of publications in high-impact (open-access) international peer-review journals -Establishment of the team that is motivated and competitive in applying to EU grants -Intensive collaboration on the promotion of sustainable Archaeotourism 23
Threats - Inertia of the system - Administrative barriers - Inadequate future public funding in Croatia Provides good argumentation. 24
