Obtaining Support From Police Officers for Crime Prevention
Obtaining Support From Police Officers for Crime Prevention Programs Presented by American Crime Prevention Institute
The prevention of crime should be a prioritized goal of every law enforcement agency. Every member of a law enforcement agency should be involved in crime prevention efforts. Uniformed patrol officers, criminal investigators and members of specialized units should view crime prevention as a key responsibility
Strategies to Gain Department Support for Crime Prevention • Support for crime prevention must come from the Sheriff or Chief of Police • Police officers should receive a significant amount of crime prevention training in their basic law enforcement training – 2 -weeks for the Honolulu, HI PD • One or two-day crime prevention seminars should be provided to law enforcement officers
• Roll-call crime prevention training should be provided • Internet-based crime prevention training for officers should be developed • The crime prevention unit should develop and distribute on annual report of activities • Line officers should be encouraged to interact with local civic organizations
• Crime prevention should be integrated with community policing efforts üSchool security surveys üConvenience store security programs üHouse of Worship crime prevention üEtc.
