Observations Qualitative or Quantitative?

How to tell the difference? • Quantitative observations have to do with things that can be precisely measured. You are being asked for a number. Qualitative observations have more to do with characteristics of what is being observed and using your 5 senses.

Examples • Quantitative observation: 1) There are seven marbles on the table. They have a diameter of 1. 5 centimeters. • Qualitative observation: 2) There a bunch of marbles on the table. They are blue in color, round in shape and smooth to the touch.

Platypus • A semiaquatic egglaying mammal (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) of Australia and Tasmania, having a broad flat tail, webbed feet, and a snout resembling a duck's bill. Also called duckbill, duck-billed platypus.

Crabs • Crabs are related to lobsters and shrimps. However, they have evolved so that they can walk or run sideways, as well as burrow and swim. The body is covered by a chitinous shell called a carapace. A crabs abdomen has become fairly reduced and is tucked under the body.

Inference • An attempt to explain your observations; guesses are based on your best judgment about the observations you have made and prior knowledge. You think about consequence and deduction.
