Observational Learning • 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Let’s list 5 things we have learned by observation in our lifetime… “monkey see, monkey do” learning
Which psychologist is associated with observational learning?
Review 1. 2. What neurons are especially useful in observational learning? What parts of the brain are involved in observational learning?
Bandura and “Self Efficacy” • According to Bandura: self -efficacy is a person’s belief in his or her ability to succeed in a particular situation. Bandura described these beliefs as determinants of how people learn, behave, and feel. • Confidence is key!
Observational Learning “basics” Observational learning + Operant Conditioning = Social Learning Theory • We learn behaviors through modeling… (Example: father gets child to say thank-you by always doing so himself)
• Sometimes observational learning is not immediately evident… called “latent learning”. Example: little boy does not say thank-you that same day, but a few weeks later at daycare says thank you when served lunch. • Insight = our “ah-ha” moment.
Bandura and the Bobo Doll • Bandura’s experiment to test how much children learn via observation. • He found that MOST of our learning is by observing others. • Modeled behavior is important!!!!
• Two groups of kids: – Experimental: see an adult walk into a room full of toys and beat a bobo doll. – Control: children just have a room of toys to play in (includes a bobo doll, but no adult comes into "beat" the doll) – Bandura's conclusion is that children copy adult behavior to the point that "violence begets violence. Mere Exposure Effect • States that just by being exposed to something, people learn to like it more. So, the more often someone is exposed to a stimulus, the more he or she will learn to like it/enjoy it.
Edward Tolman • Learning is about how we relate to our environment • Concept of cognitive or mental mapping in learning. • Mazes and rats.

Based on what you have learned about observational observationa learning… answer the following. • What is the best way to discourage a friend from interrupting you while you're studying? • Your 6 year old sister comes home using swear words after hanging out with some older kids. What do you do? • You have a friend who tells racist jokes and it makes you very uncomfortable. You want him/her to stop.
Ape Genius • As we watch the following clip, write down at least 5 instances of observational learning. • • Part I (watch 3 mins to 4 mins) https: //www. youtube. com/ watch? v=R 1 Q_Na. TJwkc Part II in it’s entirety: https: //www. youtube. com/ watch? v=x. Sm. RNyhm 0 zk
