Direct objects u These nouns or pronouns receive the action of the verb. u Ex. I threw the ball to the dog. u Threw / AV Ball / DO u Ask yourself threw who or what? ? u When a verb has a DO, it is called a transitive verb u No DO? It’s called intransitive
Noun clauses u Group of words w/a subject and verb that acts like a NOUN. u Can a noun clause be a DO? u Yes! u Ex. I love that my team won the game. u What other jobs can a noun clause do?
Helpful Hints about DO’s u You MUST have an AV to have a DO u DO’s (almost) ALWAYS come after the verb – the exception would be in a question u Not all action verbs have DO’s – these are called intransitive verbs u Linking Verbs NEVER have DO’s!!
Indirect Objects (IO’s) u Noun or pronoun that comes after the action verb but before the DO. u Answers the question to whom? For whom? To what? For what? u IMPORTANT: Only verbs with a DO can have an IO!!!
Examples u Joe baked me a cake. u What is the verb? u DO? u IO? u Joe baked the cake for me. u Always in this order… AV/IO/DO
Question? ? u Do you have to have an IO if you have a DO? u NO! u Do you have to have a DO if you have an IO? u YES! u So…the last word in a sentence can never be the IO!
Most important rule of all… u Words in a prepositional phrase can NEVER be the IO or DO! u Ex. The boy went to the store for milk. u to the store – prep phrase u For milk – prep phrase
