Objectives • To determine family functions and factors affecting roles and responsibilities of family members. • To review and analyze career choice(s) and employee productivity, family friendly practices, trends in technology and the impact these issues have on the family. • To summarize laws and public policies related to the family. 2
Basic Family Functions • Include providing for needs of the family: – physical – emotional (love, support, attention, encouragement) – intellectual – social 3
Family Roles in Society • Are influenced by: – status (working, middle, upper class) – racial or ethnic identity – family background – religious beliefs 4
Factors Affecting Responsibilities of Family Members • Include: – societal – cultural – demographic – economic 5
Family Laws • Are laws designed to protect the rights and well-being of family members • Govern the family at the local, state and federal level 6
Family Laws • Include: – marriage • both parties must be at least 18 years of age to marry without parental consent – divorce • a legal dissolution of the marriage contract 7
Family Laws • Include: – community property • any property which is acquired through the labors of either spouse during their marriage – separate property • property which can be positively shown to have been owned prior to marriage or acquired during marriage by gift or inheritance and retained as separate property 8
Family Laws • Include: – desertion • if a married person disappears for a certain period of time, the spouse is entitled to freedom from the marriage through this kind of divorce (average time is five to seven years) – adoption • laws vary from state to state about open and closed adoption policies 9
Family Laws • Include: – child support and child custody • parents are legally responsible for the financial support of their children until the children are 18 years of age (generally, noncustodial parent is required to pay child support, determined by income and children’s needs) 10
Family Laws • Include: – child labor law • protects the young person’s right to get an education without undue pressure to work long hours – Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 • entitles workers 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year following the birth or adoption of a child or to care for a family member with a serious health condition 11

Family Life • Affects workplace productivity – employees who are satisfied at home tend to be more productive at work – when work and family roles are NOT managed effectively, work performance suffers and family relations become strained – to be harmonious, families must have empathy and cooperation 14
Career Life • Affects caregiving – when employees’ work schedules are not flexible – when the career obligations take priority over caregiving – when finances are struggling and extra hours are needed – when the workplace provides child care – by being able to provide financial assistance 15
Trends to Support Families • Have been developed and implemented in employment practices by many businesses – flextime: provides employees some flexibility in scheduling the times of their workdays – compressed work week: employees work the same number of total hours each week, but compress their hours into fewer than five days 16
Trends to Support Families – job sharing: one job for two people; splitting the hours and the salary – flexspace: allows employees to complete work assignments in places other than the office, such as home • telecommuting (form of flexspace): using electronic transfer from home to office 17
