OBJECTIVES SWABT define and calculate Speed and Velocity
OBJECTIVES ØSWABT define and calculate Speed and Velocity.
Vocabulary • • Speed Velocity Instantaneous Speed Instantaneous Velocity
Speed ØSpeed is a measure of how fast something moves. ØSI unit: m/s other: miles/h , km/h (for long distances) ØSpeed is a scalar quantity ØSpeed is always positive. Ø
Average speed
Velocity Ø Velocity is change in displacement at a given time and in given direction. Ø Velocity is a vector quantity Ø Velocity ----Magnitude (SPEED) + Direction Ø Unit of Velocity ----- m/s, miles/h, km/h Ø Velocity is positive for positive displacement ( moving to right, east or + ve direction) Ø Velocity is negative for negative displacement (moving to left, west or - ve direction)
Average velocity
Velocity and Speed Train engineers use speed only. speed = 90 km/h Pilots use velocity (direction & speed). speed = 300 km/h direction = west
Instantaneous velocity The velocity at any instant is called instantaneous velocity.
Instantaneous speed An object’s speed at any given instant is Instantaneous speed. Speedometer tells the car’s speed at any instant.
