OBJECTIVE: TLW Distinguish between Ordinal and Cardinal Numbers in order to use them correctly in the target language. TLW also tell their current grade, favorite class period, and the order of nouns. Ordinal Numbers Cardinal Numbers 1. Ordinal numbers are numbers that tell the 1. Cardinal numbers are order that nouns appear (first, second, etc. ) 2. Ordinal numbers are ADJECTIVES, therefore, they must agree in gender and number with the modified noun. 3. Each ordinal number will have 4 forms: masculine sing. , masc. pl. , feminine sing. , fem. pl. 4. Primero and tercero drop the –o in the masculine sing. form. 5. Ordinal numbers usually come in front of the noun, however, when they are modifying royalty, a street’s name, or a religious figure, they come after the modified noun. See the example below. Ejemplo: inglés: She weighs 100 pounds. español: Ella pesa cien libras. 4. 101 -199, use Ciento Ejemplo: inglés: He weighs 187 pounds. español: Él pesa ciento ochenta y siete libras. 3. For the purpose of this class, write numbers 1629 in 3 -word format. ejemplo: 19 -diez y nueve In Spanish, decimals are used in the place of commas, and commas are used in the place of decimals, as it pertains to numbers. This is the fifth time. -Esta es la quinta vez. -WHY? : Since the word ‘time’ is a feminine noun, fifth has to be feminine. 2. Today is the 4 th of the month. -Hoy es el cuarto del mes. 6. I am in the 12 th grade. -Yo estoy en el duodécimo grado 3. She is the 7 th person in line. -Ella es la séptima person en la cola. -WHY? : Since the word ‘person’ is feminine, for both men and women, the word ‘seventh’ has to agree. 4.
