Object Linking and Embedding Technology n create objects that can be linked or embedded in other documents n server/client relationship n OLE Slide No. 2

OLE Windows accessory n create applications that are stored in Window application document n program creates a object called a server application n the object that is stored is called the client document n OLE Slide No. 3

Server Application program that creates the object n server fulfills requests from clients for serves n this model is also used for databases, Internet and any distributed programming n OLE Slide No. 4

Client Application Client is typically where the object is stored n the client asks or receives the services (data or processes) n in distributed model the client and server might reside on the same computer or across the network n OLE Slide No. 5

OLE its like having the program that helped create the object right there in the document where you stored it! n when that object is doubled clicked, the application that created the object is loaded into the application for editing n OLE Slide No. 6

OLE in Word n The word processor is the client and the word art , spreadsheet, database is the server OLE Slide No. 7

Choices There a number of ways you can combine information n linking n embedding n copying n OLE Slide No. 8

Linking Embedding data is different from linking n When data is linked, an image of the data appears in one document, but the data actually resides in another document. n Paste Special->Linked n OLE Slide No. 9

Linking Advantage the user can update the linked data by opening up the original application or by using the link n the change in one document is immediately reflected in another document, so updating multiple destination documents are easy n OLE Slide No. 10

Linking Disadvantage n The links must be available with the same file name and path as when the link was created. Only documents on the local computer or workgroup will be updated OLE Slide No. 11

Embedding When data is embedded, the data actually exists in the original form within another document. The person receiving the document can open and edit the embedded data if they have the application that created it. n Insert Object n OLE Slide No. 12

Advantages of Embedding Advantages to embedding is that “users” can see more data, analyze it in ways different from how it was originally intended n You do not need to worry about broken links, renaming files or sending linked files with the document because it is all self-contained. n OLE Slide No. 13

Disadvantages Each file containing the embedded data must be updated individually n Disadvantage - files can become very large n For web pages - don’t embed but put a hyperlink in the main documentotherwise takes too long to download n OLE Slide No. 14

Copy The source data is converted to text or a graphic and inserted into the Window’s application n advantage - the source data takes up less storage than embedded data. There is no link- the information appears as a snapshot. The source application does not have to be available n OLE Slide No. 15

Copy Disadvantage n The source data cannot be edited or updated; it must be re-created when a change to the source occurs. OLE Slide No. 16

Example of Embedding n Suppose a spreadsheet is an active window, you can click the COPY button on the Toolbar to place the chart on the Clipboard. Then after making a WP document active, you can click the PASTE button on the Toolbar to paste the chart into the wp document. (You can also use the paste and copy command on the Edit menu) OLE Slide No. 17

Embedding What you have done is placed an exact copy of what was in the clipboard into your wp document. Right now there exists two copies and they are independent of one another. n If you change the information in either one the change is only reflected in the edited version. n OLE Slide No. 18

Linking You can also use the Insert menu to insert “objects”. n when you use the Insert menu, you have linked these two applications, one becomes the server and the other the client n So if you make changes in one document, they will be reflected in the other n OLE Slide No. 19
