Scopus (Elsevier) Coverage • Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature with metrics tools that track, analyze and visualize research • Contains 20, 500 journals from 500 publishers plus more than 49 million records – 78% with abstracts; over 5. 3 million conference papers • Some of the journal titles and full-text articles are available from the OARE Content page • Most of the conference papers will be available directly from Scopus 23 July 2018

From the Content Home page, click on Log in for access. 23 July 2018

Enter the OARE USER NAME and PASSWORD in the appropriate boxes, change the language of the portal (if necessary), then click on the Login button, 23 July 2018

From the Access the Content page, click on Log in. Click on the OARE - Environment logo to open the program. All the Research 4 Life programs are listed. Login to any of the other programs by returning to this page (use the R 4 L App. Portal tab at the top of the web browser). To open another program, click on the specific logo. Your OARE username and password will grant access to the other programs (and ditto for an institution’s AGORA, ARDI, GOALI or Hinari username and passwords). 23 July 2018

Click on Databases for discovery … to access this database and article searching tool. 23 July 2018

Once the Browse databases list opens, click on Scopus (Elsevier). Note: For some countries, the publisher does not to grant access to this resource. 23 July 2018

Scopus Search Tool In the initial Article title, Abstract, Keywords search page, enter search for ground water AND heavy metals AND mining. Note that a search can be done by Documents, Authors, Affiliation plus an Advanced option. Note that searches can be limited to Authors, First author, Source title, Article title, Keywords and Affiliation plus Date range and Document type. 23 July 2018

The search produced 311 document results. The subsequent slides discuss numerous options listed on the Search results page. Note how the results are listed by Document title, Authors, Year, Source and Cited by. 23 July 2018

Also note the Subject area, Document Type, Source title, Keyword, Affiliation, Country/territory, Source type and Language Refine results options. Note the Open Access link to some of the results. 23 July 2018

Click on View at Publisher for article #3 23 July 2018

Displayed now is the link to the Science Direct full-text article with the option, in this case, to download the PDF. Note: Scopus is a database and does not have links to all the citations. Go to the OARE Journal collection A-Z or Publishers lists to check if articles without full-text access are available there. 23 July 2018

For the 1 st article of the original search, the View abstract option has been opened. To not display this, click on Hide abstract. Note that the year, publisher and keywords from the search are highlighted. 23 July 2018

Refine Search Options Using the Search within results option, display any articles on Metal concentration. . . This is a useful tool to further refine searches with specific keywords. 23 July 2018

From the Search within results option, four documents on metal concentration are listed. Click on Cite by - to get the list of the 14 articles that have cited the Metal concentration… article. 23 July 2018

Now displayed are the 14 documents that have cited the original study. This is a tool for identifying other articles or documents that may have similar subject matter. 23 July 2018

Using the Refine results options, the search will be limited to Year 2017, 2016, 2015 and Subject area Environmental Science. To remove the limits, click on the highlighted box. 23 July 2018

Click on Search – to display the Search history which, in this case, notes how the search was refined and the number of document results. You can open any of the searches. 23 July 2018

Download/Export/Email/Analyze Search Results Click on the link to the DOWNLOAD option. Note how four citations previously were highlighted. 23 July 2018

Displayed is the (download) Export document settings options. Click on the Text option. 23 July 2018

The Export is displayed as a Notepad (rtf) document. Right click with the mouse or touch pad. Click on Save Page As and create a Word (. doc) document. 23 July 2018

The search results now are sorted by Year (displayed), Source, Author, Affiliation, Country/Territory, Document type and Subject area. This information is useful to further refine or complete a new search. 23 July 2018

OARE Module 3 Appendix: Access Problems and Solutions for Full-text Articles or E-books This module is an overview of numerous access problems to OARE and/or the other R 4 L portals. Included is information on how to access a journal if there is no link to the full-text article – something that often is necessary when using the SCOPUS database. 23 July 2018
